From San Francisco’s “Overpaid CEO Tax” to choosing Nancy Pelosi’s replacement and narrowing the field for California’s next governor, voters will face several major decisions in the upcoming election. What is often missing from these political conversations, however, is how these measures and races could directly affect working-class and immigrant Latino communities, and whether election information is reaching them in culturally and linguistically accessible ways.

To help fill that gap, El Tecolote is partnering with CalMatters for coverage of statewide races, KQED for the 11th Congressional District contest and the San Francisco Public Press for in-depth explainers on local ballot measures.

In a recent poll conducted through El Tecolote’s Spanish-language WhatsApp community, respondents overwhelmingly identified the rising cost of living, housing affordability and jobs as top concerns. Combined with a survey published by El Tecolote and the San Francisco Public Press, these responses helped shape our election coverage ahead of the June 2 primary.

To expand access to election information for bilingual audiences, El Tecolote is translating and publishing key election information through a special bilingual print edition distributed this week. We will also provide live election results and updates through our growing Spanish-language WhatsApp community on Election Day.

The print edition will be distributed across Latino neighborhoods including the Mission, Excelsior and Tenderloin, with a focus on grocery stores, health centers, lavanderías, food banks and schools to help ensure broader community access.
