Ceremonies aim to prevent destruction of sacred site
A dispute over a 15-acre tract of land in the Glen Cove neighborhood in Vallejo has reached an impasse. A pilot program is set to begin the first week of May that would funnel low-level offenses such as disorderly conduct, theft, and some drug possession cases to a community court, lessening the burden on the San Francisco’s impacted criminal court dockets.

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised by knee-jerk backlash reactions against Latinos and Latino culture in the United States. This is an insult and disaster to the artistic field of Latin Jazz and its international legions of artists, fans, and supporters. It is also totally unacceptable.

Immigrants still besieged in Arizona
Phoenix, Ariz.—The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on April 11 upheld a federal judge’s decision to temporarily suspend key parts of Arizona’s SB1070, the law that making it a state crime to be an undocumented immigrant. The ruling is being celebrated by pro-immigration groups, but it offers little relief to immigrants.

A MĂłnica le gustaba a su trabajo. Como mujer inmigrante reciĂ©n llegada a los Estados Unidos ella sabĂa muy poco de InglĂ©s, pero eso no le impidiĂł obtener trabajo como recepcionista en un consultorio dental. Estaba muy orgullosa de ella misma y su capacidad de trabajar en un empleo que disfrutaba tanto, donde era muy apreciada por los clientes y en donde era tan buena trabajadora.

Dental chains discriminating against pregnant employees
Monica loved her job. A recent immigrant to the United States, she knew little English but that did not prevent her from obtaining a job working in a dentist’s office as a receptionist. She was very proud of herself and her ability to work hard in a job that she enjoyed. She was great with patients and good at her job.
