At a time when immigrants are facing heightened uncertainty, El Tecolote is launching a new WhatsApp community to keep Spanish-speaking residents in San Francisco informed, prepared and uplifted.
This free weekly service delivers local news, community resources, upcoming events and urgent updates, all in Spanish and curated specifically for our local readers.
We’re launching this service alongside our immigration tracker, published in both English and Spanish, which has already reached more than 30,000 readers combined — a clear sign of how urgently our community needs trusted information. It also builds on our growing library of local resources, “know your rights” guides and reporting that cuts through misinformation.
While El Tecolote is proudly bilingual, most of our digital audience engages with us in English. For years, our print edition has been a cornerstone of how we serve hard-to-reach Spanish-speaking immigrants. Now, our WhatsApp community becomes our second dedicated offering for Spanish-dominant readers — a mobile companion to our trusted print product.
This launch is also rooted in direct community feedback. In January, we co-hosted a listening day at 24th and Mission streets with Community News Lab, Mission Local and Calle 24. Many Spanish-speaking immigrants told us they read our print edition but weren’t aware we publish online. Almost all said they’d sign up for a WhatsApp service if we created one. So we did.
By joining our WhatsApp Community, you’ll receive:
- Weekly local news and information in Spanish
- Immigration policy updates that might affect you or your family
- Resources and upcoming community events
