Emory Douglas, the former minister of culture for the Black Panther Party (BPP), and artists Caleb Duarte and Rigo 23 will present art and photography from the “Zapantera Negra” art project. The Black Panther Party and Zapatista movements occurred in distinct cultural, political and historical milieus, but the two share a common appreciation of the power of the image and the written word to build their respective social movements into personal, collective and transformative experiences. Douglas published his art in The Black Panther newsletter, which at its peak distributed 139,000 copies weekly. The “Zapantera Negra” art project merges the artistic and political connections between the parties.
