Latest police shooting a symptom of a larger problem

The chaos and violence that erupted in Ferguson, Missouri following the death of Michael Brown at the hands of police may have subsided, but the images of SWAT units in heavily armored vehicles firing “less-than-lethal” munitions at terrified people remain etched in our collective consciousness. To the average American, the Ferguson depicted on TV looked more akin to a third-world warzone than the American heartland.

Community continues to fight for justice in Alex Nieto’s death

Protesters gathered along the slope of Bernal Hill at the site of Alejandro “Alex” Nieto’s memorial on Aug. 22 to begin a three-mile march from the Mission District to the San Francisco Federal Building. There, the more-than 100 supporters celebrated the Nieto family’s decision to file a civil lawsuit against the city to expedite the investigation into the 28-year-old Nieto’s death.
