Fusing musical styles, blending cultures and sharing diverse experiences—members of the San Francisco-based band Makru have found a true value in making connections.

With a unique sound that incorporates Rumba Flamenca, Reggae, Cuban Son, Cumbia, Ska and other world beats, these international musicians draw their influences from Southern France, Spain, Uruguay, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and of course the Bay Area.

Distinguished by an entirely acoustic instrumental set-up, Makru will be releasing their first in-studio album on Dec. 14, appropriately titled “Conexión.”

“Everything that makes this album possible has been based on all kinds of connections with different people, cultures, years of traveling and a connection with nature,” said vocalist and composer Raul Vargas. “It has a bit of everything.”

Following a completely self-made 2010 album, Makru connected with Bay Area producer Juan Caipo to give a new vision and feel to the band’s signature sound. The album was recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley.

Makru’s band members are Raúl Vargas, vocals, cajón and composer; Martina Castro, vocals and palmas; Anthony Jesus Sierra, percussion; Vinicio Peñate, bass; Bob Sanders, guitar; Paul Bertin, saxophone.

The CD-release party will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. at Brick & Mortar, located at 1710 Mission St.
