The stakes are especially high for Californians heading into the June 2 primary election. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has led the state for seven years, is term-limited and cannot run again. In a crowded race with 61 candidates on the ballot and five leading contenders in a rapidly shifting race, voters will help decide the future direction of California.
Under California’s primary system, the two candidates who receive the most votes in the June 2 primary, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election this November. To help voters better understand the race, El Tecolote partnered with the San Francisco Public Press to explain how the leading gubernatorial candidates plan to address issues impacting Latino communities in the S.F. Bay Area.
