Nancy Chárraga, owner of Casa Bonampak, a Mexican craft store on Valencia Street, organized the event as a celebration of Latin culture, and as a playful way to unite the community against recent attacks on Latinos lead by extremists and encouraged by presidential candidate Donald Trump. There were piñatas for children and for adults. The former had candy, costume jewelry and stickers, while the latter had cash, gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants, lotto tickets and condoms. Chárraga offered refreshing hibiscus tea, and quesadillas with tortillas featuring the likeness of the conservative candidate printed with edible inks. The piñata bashing was a chance to let out the collective frustration against the hateful rhetoric while also catching up with neighbors on a sunny day. [/su_box]
