Due to increasing cultural appropriation and commercialization of the yearly Día de Muertos celebrations in the Mission District, community members and organizations in recent years have begun to organize alternative spaces where the Mission Latino community can pay homage to their deceased loved ones in a respectful manner. Two of the largest such events took place at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts with a lineup of musical performances, and at the Mission Preparatory School with a family friendly festival.

Photographer Ekevara Kitpowsong was there to document the festivities for El Tecolote and the Calle 24 Cultural District.
