Produce to the People is an organization that is on a mission to give people in need healthy food and educate youth about the environment. We followed them as they picked fruit at gardens in public and private land in San Francisco. The organization shares its goal and how you can get fresh produce in your neighborhood for free.

  1. Thanks for this beautiful slideshow Erica, Sharah, and El Tecolote! I just wanted to add that you can also get free locally grown produce (and free farmer’s market produce) at the Free Farmstand (www.freefarmstand.org) at Parque Ninos Unidos (corner of 23rd and Treat) every Sunday from 1-3pm. And correct the statement that I made, the Julian Pantry is at St. JOHN’s on 15th and Julian (b/w Mission and Valencia) on Saturday mornings from 10-12, rather than at St. GREGORY’s (at 500 De Haro in Potrero, which also hosts an amazing food pantry on Friday afternoons, and supports other local pantries). Apologies for mixing up the names.
Another great resource is that you can access a list of places that offer free groceries and meals by calling 211.
