Delegations from different parts of the Cusco region marched throughout the city for the national strike on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023. The city complied with the strike and remained blocked almost in its entirety. Attempts to take over the Cusco airport were stopped by strong police repression that left at least 6 people injured. Hundreds of demonstrators arrived from different rural communities in the Cusco region to join the marches. Another group that traveled to Lima on behalf of their communities had heavy confrontations with a large police contingent in the capital.
Dozens of police blocked 28 de Julio Avenue in the direction of the airport.
A protester injured in the eyebrow was captured by police near the airport. Shortly afterward, a video was posted on social media showing that the protester had been beaten by several law enforcement officers at the time of capture.
