Community members gather at Balmy Alley on May 14 in San Francisco’s Mission District, bidding a final farewell to longtime resident, Andres Hernandez Rojo. Rojo, better known as the “Mayor of Balmy,” was recently evicted from his Balmy Alley residence after living there for more than a decade. From his garage, Rojo would routinely create art and repair bicycles. As folks attended the goodbye party, which included music and dance, Rojo shared what the gathering meant to him. “We’re celebrating the time that I was here, and the different communities that came to interact with me—my bicycle customers, but also the neighbors.” One of those who attended the party was Denhi Donis, known as the ‘Flower Lady,’ who is facing her own battle with eviction.
