Several hundred indigenous people from all over the world gathered at dawn on Alcatraz for a Sunrise Ceremony on Nov. 25, 2021. Commemorating the 52nd anniversary of the Alcatraz occupation, which was organized by a group of students and young people calling themselves “Indians of all Tribes,” lasted from 1969 to 1971. The ceremony acknowledged the brutal history of genocide and past atrocities suffered by indigenous people, but also celebrated their spirit of resistance and resilience passed down by their ancestors.
