BRAZIL: GUARANI LEADER NISIO GOMES IS MURDERED
On November 18 in Mato Grosso do Sul, a region located in the center of the country, a group of 40 armed and masked men murdered Nisio Gomes, a leader of the Guarani indigenous tribe in front of his community. The FUNAI, the National Foundation for the Indian, claimed that this attack was due to an agrarian conflict. The Human Rights Secretary in Brazil considers this murder a part of a campaign of systematic violence against the indigenous people in this region, known to be one of the worst in terms of violence between the indigenous population and the ranchers.

SPAIN: SOCIALISTS ACKNOWLEDGE TOUGH DEFEAT IN SPAIN’S GENERAL ELECTIONS
The center-right People’s Party (PP) won, on November 20, with a resounding victory in Spain’s elections. With practically 100 percent of the votes counted, the PP obtained a 44.5 percent and an absolute majority in the Congress of Deputies winning 186 seats out of a total of 350. The Spaniards voted in a tense atmosphere, marked by its growing unemployment of 21.5%, cuts in public spending, and a level of debt at its maximum since the birth of the euro a decade ago. Mariano Rajoy, the winner of the general elections, will not be sworn in as Prime Minister until December 20.

CHILE: MORE THAN A THOUSAND PEOPLE MARCHED AGAINST THE AIRPORT AND THE REPRESSION IN TEMUCO
On November 23, a thousand people attended a march organized by the Mapuche Territorial Alliance, in the center of Temuco and other communities in Chile, demanding the demilitarization of the region, no to the construction of the airport and the expulsion of the transnationals. Javier Meliman, representative of the territory, expressed his rejection to the construction of the new air terminal: “It’s an invasion of our land. The airport serves no productive purpose for us. It only serves the interests of the large tourist industry.” He stated that the government has usurped their land to construct the airport without informing them and he announced that there would be further actions at an international level.
