CUNY lecturer Carol Lang, speaks about the 150th anniversary of Pressident Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, that allowed Black people to join the Union army to fight against slavery and the southern Confedaracy. The battle of Milliken’s Bend in 1863 was the first victory of the recently freed Black slaves who joined the Union army, and held the line against the Confederate forces in the Civil War. This presentation will discuss the links in the fight against slave labor 150 years ago and its meaning today for workers in the U.S. and around the world.
