El Tecolote is turning 55! Join us on August 22 for cumbia, palomas and community love. Illustration: Mariana Duran

It’s our birthday month! On August 24, 1970, the first edition of El Tecolote rolled off the press, soon becoming a trusted voice for San Francisco’s Latino communities.

Over the past five decades, El Teco’s legacy has been built by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers committed to a vision of journalism that is bilingual, bicultural and rooted in service to the city’s immigrants, workers, artists and other underserved groups.

Today, El Tecolote is stronger than ever, reaching audiences on platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp while staying grounded in our core mission: to create journalism with and for our communities that informs, defends and uplifts the most marginalized among us.

We couldn’t do it without you.

To celebrate 55 years of independent community journalism, join us for a birthday fundraiser on Friday, August 22! There will be cumbia, palomas, sheet cake, a piñata and plenty of good company.

Want to get involved? We’re also looking for volunteers to help out on the day of the event. If you’re interested in joining the party committee, email andrew@accionlatina.org.

Can’t attend? You can still support our special anniversary fund. Your donation will help pay the wages of local journalists who investigate, photograph, and report on the issues that matter most to our community.

Gracias, comunidad, for 55 incredible years. ¡Aquí te esperamos!
