Why make this mask? I like this mask because it is based on a design made by a nurse.* Since it has three layers of fabric and a snug fit, the mask gives pretty good protection for running an essential errand on the block. The mask also has a pocket to insert a disposable filter made from blue shop paper towels (used in autoshops and sold at hardware stores). By inserting two layers of these towels, filtration blocks 93% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. (Source: Suay Sew Shop, tested) With the blue towels and by ensuring a tight fit around your face, this mask gets very close to performing like an N95 mask. I also like this design because you can use things you have at home, like a pillow case, a paperclip, and a clothesline cord. (But these are all items you can easily get at a hardware store or sewing shop.) This is also a good project if you’re just learning to sew on a machine. Have fun!
