If anyone still has any doubts about where Brooke Jenkins stands when it comes to justice — and especially justice for those of us who are viewed as disposable and convenient political scapegoats — you are lost.

On May 15, 2023, San Francisco’s District Attorney Jenkins, after weeks of protests and mounting pressure, released the video of the brutal killing of Banko Brown, an unarmed Black trans man who was fatally shot, point blank, by a Walgreens armed security guard, Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony, on April 27. The video confirmed what many of us knew or at least suspected: Banko wasn’t killed in “self-defense” as Jenkins predictably and publicly stated from the start, he was murdered.

Despite the blatant video evidence that shows that Banko was murdered, Jenkins — the pro-cop Afro-Latina DA who was appointed by our very own right-wing mayor London Breed to “save” our “rogue” city — is still refusing to charge Banko’s killer. And for that, among many other things, she should resign.

Following the release of the video that captured Banko Brown’s brutal fatal shooting at the hands of an armed Walgreens security guard, demonstrators rallied in front of the same Walgreens where Brown was killed before marching to City Hall. Despite clear video evidence that Brown was not only unarmed but unthreatening, San Francisco’s District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that her office would not be filing criminal charges against the security guard, Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony. For years, we’ve watched right-wing democrats in our city criminalize the poor, the unhoused, and people struggling with addiction, fueling the narrative that San Francisco is a failure. We’ve watched politicians and community leaders in this city go from chanting “Black Lives Matter” to now calling for more police. And now, after years of catering to downtown corporate interests, we see people mourning the closure of upscale retail stores more than actual human life.

That’s despicable.

When Jenkins took over for the recalled progressive DA Chesa Boudin — who conveniently was blamed for all of the city’s ills — she urged patience. She touted accountability. And promised justice.

Her latest actions show that was a lie. Resign.
