May 25 marks a global protest against the biotechnology corporation Monsanto, producer of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The march is planned in response to Congress’ “Monsanto Protection Act” approved on March 16, a bill allowing the continuation of GMO production despite health safety concerns. Forty-four countries, are slated to participate in the global protest. Proposition 37, abill aimed at curtailing GMO use in the food industry in California, was defeated in the late fall of last year. Had it been approved, the bill would have required all products containing GMOs to carry warning labels on their packaging. • San Francisco’s March will start at 11 am PST in Union Square.
