The city’s Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee on Wednesday Sept. 10 approved Supervisor David Campos’ ordinance that would allocate $1.063 million annually for the next two years towards the legal representation of Central American minors and their families.

Many of these kids, who are fleeing extreme violence in their homelands, are facing fast-tracked deportation proceedings.

“By passing this emergency funding measure, San Francisco will not only be protecting children who are escaping unthinkable violence, but we will also be taking a stand for due process rights for all. Studies show that 9 in 10 children without legal counsel are deported from this country. San Francisco has an opportunity to be the first major City to meaningfully stand up for these children. I hope we’ll inspire others to follow suit,” said Supervisor Campos.
