Featuring Father/Son performances by Saleem Shakir & Jahsiri Asabi Shakir and Mother/Daughter performances by Indigenous Chaos.

Hosted by Series Curator: Sandra Garcia Rivera

On the evening of the special Lunada, a Full Lunar Eclipse will occur. The Earth will block all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. These events are quite striking due to the Moon’s vibrant red color. As if that wasn’t reason enough to come out and howl at the moon, LUNADA is celebrating the voices of Bay Area families as we feature Father/Son and Mother/Daughter performances. The poets and troubadors featured this evening are related by blood, talent and artistry as we honor the regenerative nature of the moon cycle on the longest night of the year, the Winter Solstice.

LUNADAS is the Bay Area’s only full moon literary and performance gathering featuring community poets, local legends, visiting mystics, and other mero meros of the stage. Guest curated by some of the Bay Area’s most dynamic word slingers and artists, and located in the heart of the Mission District at Galería de la Raza, LUNADAS are community gatherings where stories, food, songs, and spirit are shared. Musicians and first timers are always welcome on the Open Mic. Open Mic sign up at 7:30pm.

ARTIST BIOS:

Jahsiri Asabi-Shakir: “Open your mind to everything, and only the best will enter. That is Jahsiri Asabi-Shakir’s motto. He is a 16 year old artist and poet from Oakland, and currently attends Bentley High School. He started writing lyrics at about 11 years old, and has been writing since. His father, Saleem Shakir, growing up in the golden age of hip hop wanted to become a hip hop artist as a young adult, but knowing he had to support his family, he made the wiser choice of becoming an educator. Jahsiri still remembers free styling at 7 years old with his father on long car rides or aside the Taste of Africa truck at the Ashby Flea Market. He specializes in a cappella hip hop, and describes it as a clash of hip hop and spoken word, however he sees the two art forms as nearly one in the same.

Saleem Shakir: “Father of Jahsiri Asabi-Shakir.”

Indigenous Chaos: Comprised of three generations of family members, Indigenous Chaos is a performing collective that offers a down to Earth, hard hitting blend of political comedy, music, parodies, skits and poetry. Members Include Graciela Serna-Nutter, Juan Martinez, Jeremiah Martinez, Adrian Pacheco, Anais Pacheco, and Atlixcatzin Pacheco, with occasional special guest artists. Family member Dorothy Martinez acts as the group’s manager.
