In the spirit of transparency and accountability, El Tecolote would like to apologize to our community for the errors that were published in our cover story from last issue, headlined: “San Francisco struggles with limited COVID testing access amid latest variant emergence” (“San Francisco batalla con el limitado acceso a pruebas del COVID ante brote de nueva variante”).

It has been brought to our attention that three members of our community, who were featured in said article, were repeatedly misquoted, misrepresented, and had quotes falsely attributed to them, which has resulted in the damaging of their reputation. That article has since been unpublished from our website, and the reporter has since resigned.

As a legacy newspaper, we strive to amplify the voices and efforts of our community, and as journalists, we have the obligation and responsibility to amplify those voices accurately.

In this specific case, we did not live up to that obligation and responsibility. There are no excuses for these actions.

Thus, the staff at El Tecolote sends its most sincere apologies to those who were misquoted and misrepresented in the story, and for any hurt and damage that our story caused. We vow to do better, and we’re actively trying to restore the trust that may have been broken with our reporting.

In Community,

Alexis Terrazas
