“Rupert Garcia: The Magnolia Editions Project 1991-2011” is a comprehensive study of one of the Bay Area’s foremost artists and revolutionaries of digital printmaking.

Garcia achieved recognition primarily through his paintings and silkscreens, but when the studio director of Magnolia Editions approached him in 1991, Garcia began to include new technological possibilities in his work.

Magnolia projects, such as this Garcia collection, typically incorporate a mix of traditional and digital techniques, such as merging painting and printmaking by printing over hand-painted 3-D textures.

Magnolia Editions Inc., which is located at 2527 Magnolia St. in Oakland, is a fine art studio, and publisher of works on paper, artist books, and public art.

Garcia says he is “revisiting subjects and themes from earlier work while using digital means” and continuing his “search for new ways of making art to move us emotionally and heighten our awareness of the world around us.”

The ongoing collaboration of Rupert Garcia with Magnolia Editions has yielded an abundance of complex and engaging art. This catalog collection is a prime example of the works of a man who is “positioned squarely in the middle of the analog/digital divide,” and as a result is able to channel the power of both into his images, lending them new life and substance.
