{"id":72143,"date":"2026-07-09T09:16:59","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T16:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?p=72143"},"modified":"2026-07-13T12:34:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T19:34:52","slug":"latina-women-lowriders-sf-bay-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/latina-women-lowriders-sf-bay-area\/","title":{"rendered":"Bay Area Latinas show the lowrider community how to really roll"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Although women were not guaranteed the right to obtain credit in their own names until the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974, women have long claimed their place behind the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, Latinas have cruised boulevards, restored classic cars, customized rides and helped shape lowrider culture \u2014 even when people assumed the cars belonged to men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That legacy was on display June 6 at the de Young Museum, where more than 20 lowriders lined the museum\u2019s lawn for a celebration of women in lowriding. The event included a car show, short documentary screenings and a panel discussion highlighting women lowriders from Southern California to the Bay Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/mujeres-latinas-lowriders-sf\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/mujeres-latinas-lowriders-sf\/\">Lee esta historia en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them was Lily Cooper, a South San Francisco resident who grew up in the Mission District in an immigrant household. Cooper has owned her pink 1964 Buick Riviera for six years, but said people are still often surprised to learn the meticulously maintained lowrider is hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For women interested in joining the lowrider community, whether by building a car from scratch or modifying an existing ride, Cooper\u2019s advice is simple: \u201cJust do it. It\u2019s a lifelong project. It\u2019s endless. Photo: Emma Garcia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebration was held in connection with <em>Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON<\/em>, a special exhibition at the de Young. Simpson, a mixed-media artist born and raised in Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, grew up near Espa\u00f1ola, a city widely known as the Lowrider Capital of the World.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>LEXICON<\/em>, two of Simpson\u2019s lowriders are displayed alongside her sculptures, bringing the worlds of lowriding and fine art into the same museum space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simpson said she is thrilled to see lowriding recognized in a museum setting, noting that the artistry behind the culture has not always received the respect or visibility it deserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For women interested in entering the lowrider community, her message is straightforward: \u201cDon\u2019t let anything stop you. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication, but we can do it. This is nothing we can\u2019t do if we put our minds to it and put in a little bit of elbow grease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Valerie Tulier-Laiwa, lowriding has long been tied to San Francisco\u2019s Mission District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas-born and Mission-raised, Tulier-Laiwa first fell in love with lowriding during a San Francisco State University class trip to East Los Angeles. Photo: Emma Garcia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I was able to do back then with lowriding, when it first started in San Francisco, was to set the groundwork for generations to come,\u201d Tulier-Laiwa said. \u201cAnd now those generations are here, and lowriding is now part of mainstream culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With women\u2019s car clubs now growing in popularity, Tulier-Laiwa said she is proud that women lowriders \u201cgive the men a run for their money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t have to depend on men car clubs,\u201d she said. \u201cThey don\u2019t have to ask permission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angel Romero has owned her purple 1965 Chevrolet Impala, nicknamed \u201cSaturday Love,\u201d for 23 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, Romero founded Due\u00f1as, an all-women\u2019s car club based in Sunnyvale. As the club\u2019s president, she said women lowriders are still often overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be in the driver\u2019s seat, my boyfriend will get out to pump my gas, and people will be like, \u2018Nice car, bro!\u2019\u201d Romero said. \u201cThey automatically assume it\u2019s his car. But you know what? This one is mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Romero\u2019s Impala was displayed in front of the de Young Museum during the June 6 celebration. For her, the event reflected the power of women coming together through lowriding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLatinas are powerful,\u201d Romero said. \u201cBut when we all get together, us women unite. The sisterhood, my car club&#8230; we would not be where we are today without the unity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ruby Ramirez has owned her 1950 Chevy Fleetline Deluxe, nicknamed \u201cXingona DeAquellas,\u201d for 19 years. Ramirez, a member of Frisco\u2019s Finest Car Club, said her favorite place in her Chevy is the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is where she feels in control, especially when she turns up the music and goes for a cruise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a woman lowrider, Ramirez said people are still too used to seeing men as the assumed car owners. But women lowriders, she said, know their cars and know the culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe aren\u2019t just a pretty face, or a girl behind the wheel,\u201d Ramirez said. \u201cWe know about our cars.
