A day after Dolores Huerta turned 96, scores of residents gathered in the heart of San Francisco\u2019s Mission District for the city\u2019s annual farmworker march \u2014 a yearly event that now carries a new name, date and central figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 33 years, the march honored C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez and was held around his March 31 birthday. In the wake of sexual abuse allegations<\/a> against Ch\u00e1vez that have shaken Latino communities nationwide, organizers renamed the event in Huerta\u2019s honor and moved it to April to coincide with her April 10 birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The claims, detailed in a recent investigation, include accusations from women who said Ch\u00e1vez abused them as children in the 1970s. Huerta, his longtime collaborator and co-founder of the United Farm Workers, also said publicly that she was abused and had kept it secret for decades to protect the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe farmworkers need our support today more than ever,\u201d said Eva Royale, a former United Farm Workers staffer who has organized San Francisco\u2019s annual march for more than three decades. \u201cFarm workers need peace, jobs and justice, so we need to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s events began Friday with a Labor & Community Breakfast<\/a> at the San Francisco Longshoreman\u2019s Hall. On Saturday, marchers gathered at 19th and Dolores streets for the newly renamed Dolores Huerta Parade and Festival<\/a> before heading east along 19th Street to Mission Street and continuing to 24th Street. The march ended at Folsom Street, followed by a street festival along 24th Street through the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organizers say the renaming of the parade is part of a broader effort to center farmworkers, not just individual leaders, and to recognize figures like Huerta, whose contributions have often been overshadowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A broader reckoning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The changes to the parade reflect a wider push to reevaluate Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s legacy across California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s name appears on streets, schools and public buildings across California, many now under review as communities grapple with the allegations. Following the reports, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation renaming the March 31 holiday to Farmworkers Day<\/a>, effective March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In San Francisco, that conversation has become especially visible around C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez Street, a major thoroughfare that cuts through the Mission District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many are unsettled with the speed of the changes. \u201cWe reacted too soon,\u201d said John Mendoza, 63, festival organizer for the last 17 years. \u201cNow they\u2019re considering naming it after the karate guy, Chuck Norris Boulevard<\/a>. We need to push back on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not okay with the renaming,\u201d said Judy Mart\u00ednez, 63, attending the festivities under a red UFW umbrella. Her father, Larry Mart\u00ednez, was Cesar Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s bodyguard and as a child didn\u2019t know the taste of grapes.  \u201cI believe in due process,\u201d said Mart\u00ednez, legal staff at Alameda County Counsel. \u201cThis happened 60 years ago and in less than four days you want to strip everything down like he didn\u2019t exist? Rather than erasing Ch\u00e1vez\u2019 from public view, add Huerta\u2019s, she offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everyone agrees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe renaming is essential,\u201c said 21-year-old San Jose State University student Alyssa Gamino at the street festival. \u201cIt\u2019s only fair – we have to hold people accountable, no matter if they\u2019re in the grave because it represents our morals\u2026 of course it\u2019s important what he did for workers\u2019 rights too, but if he hurt women, he shouldn\u2019t get all the recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd yes, change the street name to Dolores Huerta,\u201d Gamino added. \u201cShe\u2019s actually accomplished the same thing as C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez so why not rename it after her? She\u2019s been an essential part of the movement.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supervisor Jackie Fielder has said she supports efforts to remove Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s name from institutions in District 9, which includes the street and a local elementary school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the shift is already playing out across the cultural and artistic landscape of the Mission and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just days after the allegations surfaced, a mural of C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez at a well-known Mission District home was painted over by the property owner and artist, who said the decision was made quickly in response to the reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mural, located at the Latin Rock Music House near York and 25th streets, had long been part of a site celebrating Latino cultural figures. In its place, artists said they are now considering new imagery, including honoring Dolores Huerta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar efforts are unfolding across the Bay Area, where artists are removing or reworking images of Ch\u00e1vez in schools, public spaces and planned murals following the allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The changes \u201cfeel very reactionary, I mean, where does it all end?\u201d asked 31-year-old Erik Zepeda Flores, an environmental activist at his booth. \u201cErasing him from history erases the complexity of the conversation. Removing him from the movement as a whole discredits his accomplishments as an organizer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, he reflected, there is a lesson for Latino men. \u201cThere\u2019s tons of machismo that can harm not only people around you but your own legacy – that no matter how much good you do, the negative, toxic machismo can negate all that.  This has led me to minimize the harm.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some artists, the decision is about accountability and centering survivors. For others, it raises questions about how to reconcile Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s legacy with the harm described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many residents, the moment has been difficult, forcing a reckoning between Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s role in advancing farmworker rights and the harm described in the allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
