Its body, shaped like a human form, balances on all fours, sharp eyes piercing the room and a grin that\u2019s almost playful, almost feral. Human-like hands press into the tiles. The tail curves upward behind it, suspended mid-motion. At first glance, it reads as animal. Then the details shift. The body carries breasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/sf-latino-arte-galeria-sinverguenza\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/sf-latino-arte-galeria-sinverguenza\/\">Lee esta historia en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This painting is part of transgender artist Luka Fernandez\u2019s three-piece series titled <em>Genesis Androfelino<\/em>, on display at Acci\u00f3n Latina as part of the 14-artist group exhibition, <em>sinverg\u00fcenza<\/em>. The art show unapologetically reclaims the term \u201csinverg\u00fcenza\u201d to celebrate people who live outside of prescribed roles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fernandez\u2019s piece is a homage to the breasts they once had, and their direct challenge to fixed gender constructions. \u201cI had top surgery, so I don\u2019t have breasts anymore,\u201d Fernandez said. \u201cBut I remember what that was like.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time in their life, the 25-year-old Peruvian-American artist is centering their identity and experience in their work. Acrylic, oil stick and oil pastel on board.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But as they grew older, that transformation began to surface in textured, surreal oil paintings that explore masculinity, femininity and the body itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in San Jose to a Peruvian mother and American father, Fernandez was raised in Lima, Peru before moving to Buenos Aires, Argentina as a teenager, where they came to identify as butch and later began their medical transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since their parents divorced when they were 9, they were primarily raised by their mother. \u201cI feel closer to my mom\u2019s side of the family, and culturally speaking,\u201d they said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 21 artworks in the gallery confront body shaming, misogyny and homophobia without apology. Fernandez, who is a Root Division <a href=\"https:\/\/rootdivision.org\/artist-page\/luka-amaru-fernandez\/\">Fellow<\/a>, said they once created realistic nude paintings, but the work began to feel surface-level. \u201cI\u2019ve started exploring more of my spirit identity and the decolonization of gender itself,\u201d they said. \u201cWhen I\u2019m painting, I\u2019m not just painting my literal body. I\u2019m painting or drawing ideas or concepts of bodies that I relate to.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the jaguar series, Fernandez explored two tensions: a seemingly androgynous figure with breasts. Oil on canvas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The exhibition can be viewed as a series of self-portraits, like Josie Dybe\u2019s acrylic piece of a nude self-portrait while holding pink anthurium flowers, or Violeta Gonzalez\u2019s photograph of herself posing naked in front of a laptop. Beyond self-portraits, the exhibition also reclaims cultural rituals that once carried shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one corner of the gallery stands the bodice of a quincea\u00f1era dress, transformed into sculpture by Sophia Diaz-Muca. Once stiff, white and restrictive, the dress now hangs altered, cut, adorned and reassembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I was 15, I tried on the dress my dad picked out for my quincea\u00f1era,\u201d Diaz-Muca wrote in a statement. \u201cI didn\u2019t want this dress or that party. I wanted a first kiss.\u201d After the celebration, she stuffed the dress into a garbage bag and pushed it to the back of her closet, ashamed of how she looked in photographs: her braces, her baby fat, the angle of her chin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years later, she cut the dress apart. \u201cThe dress became \u2018her,\u2019\u201d she wrote. \u201cI decorated her with the jewelry I couldn\u2019t throw away and the words I could never forget.\u201d Now the garment hangs on the gallery wall, rigid bodice intact, edges frayed, ribbons tied and untied. \u201cThe beauty is not in the pristine whiteness of a dress,\u201d she wrote, \u201cbut in the mess you will make.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearby are three black-and-white self-portraits. The images were created by Stephanie Barajas, 33, a Mexican immigrant based in San Jose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI fell in love with the ability to have a device in my hand that could capture the world around me,\u201d Barajas said. Barajas began experimenting with self-portraiture as a way to reclaim her love for her body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been fat all of my life, and my experience of being a fat woman has definitely influenced how I see myself,\u201d Barajas said. \u201cAs a performer, and someone who loves telling stories, I think it just became natural for me to turn the camera around and start using myself as both the subject and artist.\u201d The prints are embroidered by hand with colored threads like maroon and yellow. Black-and-white digital photograph with collage and cotton embroidery thread on black cardstock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt like I wasn\u2019t allowed to take up space, physically and emotionally,\u201d she said. \u201cThose three pieces walk you through that process.\u201d Barajas says that over time, she learned to photograph others the way she photographs herself: without judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the group exhibition\u2019s opening reception on Feb. 14, Barajas was struck by the power art has. \u201cI was so moved by how much you can learn from someone through their art,\u201d she expressed. \u201cThis show really allows you to look very deep into each of the artists. Their psyche, hearts.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Fernandez, the emotional response is the point. \u201cBeauty isn\u2019t always pleasant,\u201d they said. \u201cIf the artwork makes you feel anything, anger, shame, sadness, longing\u2013it\u2019s a successful artwork.
