In San Francisco, asylum seekers were detained during routine immigration court check-ins, prompting <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-ice-raid-protest-arrests\/\">protests and clashes<\/a> with police across the Bay Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/kinkade-volante-respuesta-rapida-ice\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/kinkade-volante-respuesta-rapida-ice\/\">Lee esta historia en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, Kinkade responded swiftly. Using a red Micron marker, they sketched a flyer in a tan-toned sketchbook compiling Bay Area rapid response hotline numbers \u2014 a network of community-based immigrant rights organizations operating 24\/7 to respond to suspected or confirmed enforcement actions. The hotline helps verify ICE activity and connects detained individuals with emergency legal support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019m seeing all of these numbers floating around,\u201d Kinkade said. \u201cAnd it would be helpful [to have them compiled].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After posting the flyer to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DFL3M3dyyOU\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\"> Instagram<\/a>, the image quickly spread online and onto the streets. Photo: Pablo Unzueta for El Tecolote\/CatchLight Local<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The original drawing depicts a cornfield in red tracing, a homage to Kinkade\u2019s close relationship with farmworkers through their full-time work as a community mental health therapist with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alasdreams.com\/\"> Ayudando Latinos A So\u00f1ar<\/a> in Half Moon Bay. Across the top, the flyer reads: \u201cOHLONE LAND BAY AREA ICE RAPID RESPONSE COMMUNITY NETWORKS.\u201d Hotline numbers fill the center. At the bottom, a message in Spanish declares: \u201cNING\u00daN SER HUMANO ES ILEGAL,\u201d finalized with a tiny red star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Kinkade, who identifies as queer, the artwork does not solely belong to them: \u201cIt\u2019s ours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the artwork went public, the image has taken on multiple iterations. \u201cPeople make edits to it, change the color,\u201d said Kinkade. \u201cI\u2019ve been encouraging that. They work with paper and pen. Their oil paintings are spiritual and raw, often focusing on hands or still lifes. They favor bold, warm and earthy colors \u2014 a palette connecting to the farming towns along the Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Earlier this year, Kinkade shared a linocut piece honoring the Indigenous Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, Mexico. The work features a large corn stalk filling the frame in bold red, and red hues. A sewing machine stands at the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, they\u2019ve been organizing virtual workshops that invite artists to organize against ICE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cArt-making for me is a source of healing,\u201d Kinkade said. \u201cIt\u2019s a source of critiquing [the world]. Courtesy: Winsor Kinkade<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI call this practice <em>artemonio (arte and testimonio),\u201d<\/em> they said<em>. <\/em>\u201cA<em>rtemonio <\/em>becomes a way that we can practice everyday resistance and can be a seed of planting new futures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To encourage that process, Kinkade created a<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1Sh66KJ-IJERK8bqZdy-jKv_eYjwZbai0\"> public art folder<\/a> where people can download free community resource lists, anti-ICE flyers, posters and messages to adapt and share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinkade is clear-eyed about the limits of the work. Hotline numbers alone, they said, aren\u2019t going to stop ICE raids or detentions.
