About 19 students marched into the War Memorial Opera House Wednesday evening, demanding to meet with San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) Superintendent Maria Su as the city\u2019s public schools remained closed for a third consecutive day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frustrated by the lack of resolution to the ongoing teachers\u2019 strike, the students said they wanted answers directly from the district\u2019s top leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once inside, they arranged chairs in a circle, anticipating a face-to-face conversation with Su. Union leaders and teachers gathered in the room to watch as students prepared to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, Hong Mei Pang, SFUSD\u2019s head of communications and governance, informed the delegation that Su would not be able to attend. Pang sat down to address the students and said she would relay their concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One by one, students stood to speak, addressing Pang as if she were Su.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just want to say, where the hell is Maria Su?\u201d said Nick, an 18-year-old high school senior. His question drew loud applause from the room. Some teachers nodded in agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a very passionate topic for all of us,\u201d Pang responded. \u201cCan we just make sure that we are using language that is respectful?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d Nick replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam Hrizi, 16, a student at Balboa High School, followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s just very passionate about this subject,\u201d Hrizi said. \u201cIt does bring out some stuff in people when we haven\u2019t been in school in three days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Pang responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur teachers are here fighting,\u201d Hrizi continued. \u201cAnd if Maria Su can\u2019t come and talk, that is a shame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the roughly 30-minute meeting, Pang reiterated that Su was at the bargaining table and would receive the students\u2019 concerns. The discussion grew emotional as several students shared personal stories about how the strike was affecting their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucciano, 17, a senior at Mission High School, spoke about his older sister, a fourth-grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s overwhelmed, overworked,\u201d Alvarez said, pausing as his eyes filled with tears. \u201cShe just needs more help. She comes home every day exhausted. The school needs more funding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other students echoed concerns about teacher pay and their own futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow are they going to be able to teach when they don\u2019t have enough money for materials that support us?\u201d another student said. \u201cI bet all of these teachers want us to have a good future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SFUSD officials announced Wednesday evening that schools will remain closed Thursday, marking a fourth day of canceled classes. Approximately 50,000 students have been out of school, leaving many families scrambling to arrange childcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the district presenting a new proposal, union leaders said the two sides remain far apart. UESF continues to push for fully covered family health care benefits, higher salaries and improved working conditions in special education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the meeting concluded, students pressed Pang to arrange a direct meeting with Su.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s make it happen. Let\u2019s find a date,\u201d Pang said. \u201cShe wants to sit down with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeautiful,\u201d Hrizi replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTomorrow,\u201d another student quipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTomorrow?\u201d Hrizi said, smiling. \u201cI think that day works great. Why not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s figure it out,\u201d Pang responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
