Supervisors vote unanimously to preserve MCCLA building as Latino arts hub"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>San Francisco\u2019s historic hub for Latino arts at 2868 Mission Street will remain a dedicated cultural center for generations to come, following a unanimous resolution adopted Tuesday by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authored by District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder, the resolution affirms the city\u2019s commitment to preserving the building as a Latino arts and culture space during and after a major seismic retrofit scheduled to begin in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a priceless, priceless place of future-making for the Mission,\u201d Fielder said after the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Read more:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/mccla-latino-community-photos\/\">These portraits show the Mission community\u2019s fight to save S.F.\u2019s MCCLA<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution is separate from ongoing community efforts to save the nonprofit Mission Cultural Center for the Latino Arts (MCCLA), which was founded in 1977 and <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-mission-latino-arts-center\/\">collapsed under financial distress <\/a>earlier this year. Photo: Emma Garcia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nancy Pili Hern\u00e1ndez, a community activist, described the building\u2019s role during the ongoing SFUSD strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were in the rain taking care of kids locked out of school because the Mission Cultural Center is closed,\u201d she said. \u201cIt should be the first place that we open as a strike school. We can print posters, we have dance spaces, we have stages, we can practice in small groups with young people. That\u2019s what it\u2019s made for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calle 24 Executive Director Susana Rojas, who is leading the effort to revive MCCLA, said more than 300 people gathered last week to explore solutions. Their next meeting is scheduled for March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMCCLA will never be what it once was,\u201d Rojas said. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at the possibility of a new fiscal sponsor for the organization. Photo: Pablo Unzueta for El Tecolote\/CatchLight Local<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As the seismic work moves ahead, \u201cthe city will continue to explore opportunities to ensure that the 2868 Mission Street site can continue to serve as a vibrant cultural space for generations to come,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supervisors Myrna Melgar, Chyanne Chen, Shamann Walton and Rafael Mandelman co-sponsored Fielder\u2019s resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI danced Afro-Latin dance at Carnaval since I was 18 and throughout three pregnancies,\u201d said Melgar. \u201cMy girls dance now and they dance with me. Dance is an important part of how we connect to our community and our culture, and it happens in that building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melgar criticized what she described as historic funding disparities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis would never have happened if it were the San Francisco Ballet or the Opera,\u201d she said. \u201cThis was the direct result of an underserved community that doesn\u2019t have as many resources, but desperately needs that connection to community, to culture, and the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is no imminent threat that the building at Mission and 24th streets will be converted to another use, Fielder said the resolution ensures the city\u2019s commitment is clearly stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Board of Supervisors are rolling out giveaways and tax breaks to property owners and developers that have money and connections,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause of how wealth is racialized,\u201d she added, \u201cit affects Black and brown communities the most.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correction:<\/strong> <em>An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the Mission Cultural Center for the Latino Arts declared bankruptcy.
