The imagery represents the emotional challenges that can accompany immigration, including family separation and sudden life changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/sf-faroles-arte-mujeres-migrantes\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/sf-faroles-arte-mujeres-migrantes\/\">Lee esta historia en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[It] is me during moments when my emotions feel clouded, when I feel alone, incapable, or afraid of not achieving anything in life,\u201d said Nadia Rodriguez, 22. \u201cThe other figure, holding her hand and carrying a star in her heart, is also me: my true self, guided by hope, inner light and resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The figures behind her, Rodriguez said, represent Latino and immigrant communities as a whole, including family and friends who offer support and remind her she is not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez is one of 15 Asian and Latino immigrant women participating in <a href=\"https:\/\/christinewongyap.com\/work\/2025\/baywindows.html\"><em>Bay Windows<\/em><\/a>, a public art exhibition featuring sculptural lanterns designed to bridge San Francisco\u2019s Chinese and Latino communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-tiled-gallery aligncenter is-style-rectangular\"><div class=\"\"><div class=\"tiled-gallery__gallery\"><div class=\"tiled-gallery__row\"><div class=\"tiled-gallery__col\" style=\"flex-basis:53.58326%\"><figure class=\"tiled-gallery__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-height=\"1732\" data-id=\"70305\" data-link=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?attachment_id=70305\" data-url=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/BayWindows-W6-Workshop-at-GaleriaDeLaRaza-photoLeeOscarGomez-416x480.jpg\" data-width=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/BayWindows-W6-Workshop-at-GaleriaDeLaRaza-photoLeeOscarGomez-416x480.jpg?ssl=1\" data-amp-layout=\"responsive\"\/><\/figure><\/div><div class=\"tiled-gallery__col\" style=\"flex-basis:46.41674%\"><figure class=\"tiled-gallery__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-height=\"2000\" data-id=\"70306\" data-link=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?attachment_id=70306\" data-url=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/BayWindows-MayraAlfaro-YurismaGonzalez-papercutting-photoLeeOscarGomez-360x480.jpeg\" data-width=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/BayWindows-MayraAlfaro-YurismaGonzalez-papercutting-photoLeeOscarGomez-360x480.jpeg?ssl=1\" data-amp-layout=\"responsive\"\/><\/figure><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Christine Wong Yap, the project\u2019s lead artist, worked with immigrant women from both communities to translate their stories into lanterns made of paper, cloth and metal. The resulting exhibition explores themes including immigration, workers\u2019 rights, cost of living, affordable housing, public safety and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe seed of this idea began a few years ago, when the \u2018doom loop\u2019 narratives of San Francisco were starting,\u201d Yap said. \u201cI didn\u2019t like how those narratives focused on billionaires and the tech sector, completely ignoring the working class, especially immigrant communities who live here and keep this city running.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yap worked with bilingual interpreters to ensure the workshops were fully trilingual, conducted in Spanish, English and Cantonese. Participants developed their designs through guided prompts, brainstorming sessions, reflective writing and visual sketching, both in small groups and one-on-one meetings. Yap later translated those ideas into sketches and paper templates that participants used to cut their lantern designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the daughter of immigrant parents, Yap said the project was deeply personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking with Chinese- and Spanish-speaking communities made sense to me,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are the two largest groups of San Franciscans with limited English proficiency, but they also have a lot in common. It felt meaningful to bring them together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez, who is originally from El Salvador, has lived in the United States for two years. Photo: Lee Oscar Gomez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez said the most challenging part of the project was transforming her experience as a young migrant into art. \u201cIt became a space for healing and connection, where our stories were heard and represented as part of the same community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iraheta, who has lived in the United States for 12 years, learned about Bay Windows through the Mission Cultural Center, a previous host of the project. She said language barriers initially posed challenges, as some participants spoke only Spanish while others spoke Cantonese or English. Once those obstacles were overcome, she said she found the experience deeply rewarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat surprised me about Asian culture is its hospitality, solidarity and dynamism, just like us Latinos,\u201d Iraheta said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her lantern reflects the impact of unemployment on her life. \u201cAs you can see, a person is falling, and below, an alternative support group awaits,\u201d she said. \u201cThe images of clothing reflect my reinvention in the world of sewing and making alterations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iraheta\u2019s lantern is displayed in the window of Acci\u00f3n Latina on 24th Street, the headquarters of <em>El Tecolote<\/em>. She hopes people who see it \u201clearn that, despite the adversities that arise in our path, we always have alternatives to survive, make life more bearable and be reborn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The lanterns will be on view through March 11. Bay Windows will host a <a href=\"http:\/\/v\">scavenger hunt o<\/a>n Jan. 24, 2026.
