His face is turned toward the sky: he\u2019s fast asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s one of the first photographs visitors encounter in SFMOMA\u2019s current exhibit, <em>Ground Rules,<\/em> featuring the work of photographer Alejandro Cartagena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The image is part of his <em>Carpool<\/em> series, photographed from 2011 to 2012. Cartagena documents everyday people riding in the beds of pickup trucks in Monterrey, Mexico. Shot from a bird&#8217;s-eye view atop freeway overpasses, the photographs show day laborers, families and kids sharing food, sleeping and relaxing after long days of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/carpoolers-sfmoma-alejandro-cartagena\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/carpoolers-sfmoma-alejandro-cartagena\/\">Lee esta historia en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a decade later, <em>Carpool<\/em> continues to circulate widely on social media.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think that people would resonate with the images,\u201d Cartagena said in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DR5NfgkkgGd\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\">interview<\/a> with <em>El Tecolote<\/em> and <em>48 Hills<\/em>. Photo courtesy: SFMOMA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>By returning to the same place over the course of the year, he began seeing the same people as the seasons changed. \u201cTo have the representation of everyday life, of workers surviving, that was something that I wanted to represent,\u201d he said. \u201cThat moment of so much pain that my country was going through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, the Mexican city of Monterrey was experiencing extreme violence amid a cartel war between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2010\/06\/25\/128085047\/drug-war-besieges-mexicos-northern-metropolis\">Los Zetas and the Sinaloa Carte<\/a>l.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cartagena was born in the Dominican Republic in 1977 and moved to Monterrey in 1990. He began <em>Carpool<\/em> in 2011 to center the lives of everyday people overshadowed by the violence surrounding them<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/49-headless-bodies-dumped-north-mexico-highway-225844950.html?guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9lbi53aWtpcGVkaWEub3JnLw&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAHgCaaP3JWFWxygm8rdf1DCKQspflMdPlzVdVv21bf-mSI7USpqJIexrWaoWXW-9f-JysIZ5ml2ooilII_PkOeUl4gQdqi981MwpfU8hpGD1E7yBskPtf7UadInNvJAsTCt99sSEvzbMQ9u85aeIpfMNgBiO9diMZKeb0AZnr1xa\">.<\/a> It was a tough undertaking. Photo courtesy: SFMOMA\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One afternoon at the SFMOMA, 22-year-old Netanya Buenrostro, a student at the California College of the Arts who is Mexican and Guatemalan, wandered through the exhibit.\u201cI wanted to come support another Latino artist,\u201d she said. \u201cIt really inspired me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buenrostro said Cartagena\u2019s work reminded her of her own family, returning home tired from a long day working in construction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Online, some critics have raised privacy concerns about the photographs. Others argue the images are an honest portrayal of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like if the pictures have been around that long, and nothing bad has come of it, it&#8217;s probably fine,\u201d said Kota Borsdorf, who was visiting SFMOMA for her birthday. \u201cObviously, if it did have any bad impact, that would be important to consider.
