People don\u2019t come outside. They\u2019re afraid, those without papers,\u201d said Johnny Rocha, 44, a Nicaraguan business owner who runs Antojitos Patry with his wife near 24th and Mission Street. Rocha said the street was nearly empty last week amid the \u201csurge\u201d threat, but he kept his shop open \u201cbecause if we don\u2019t, how are we going to pay the rent?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Wednesday, foot traffic on Mission Street had mostly returned, though some blocks remained quieter than usual. Along 24th Street, residents carried bundles of marigolds while shoppers trickled in and out of stores. There\u2019s an uncertain liveliness in the neighborhood, which is preparing to host its 44<sup>th<\/sup> annual D\u00eda de los Muertos procession. Her father was deported when she was 8 years old. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to go through that situation, especially for my mother who was left alone,\u201d she said. \u201cBut still, one has to prepare. I have uncles and aunts, so you have to make a family plan to see who will take care of the children. Just being prepared more than anything.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, Calvo sells bright, orange marigolds. She sells fruits and pupusas on Mission Street and only returned to work Wednesday morning, her first shift in nearly one week. Backdropped by colorful quince\u00f1era dresses inside the boutique, Andrea formed bouquets of marigolds to sell. She\u2019ll be selling pupusas outside the storefront on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith everything that\u2019s happening with this administration, thankfully, they were able to contain some of that [threats],\u201d she said. \u201cBut we also cannot let our guard down, so let\u2019s hope the day of festivals is a good day for everyone. We\u2019ll be here, supporting one another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just up the street, near Van Ness Avenue, a longtime business owner who asked to remain anonymous said the street was relatively quiet last week, reminiscent of the pandemic.
