Send a photo of your altar for a chance to win tickets to \u2018Coco\u2019 at the SF Symphony<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nAmong the many altars that bloom across San Francisco each October, few are as emotionally charged as those curated by Rio Ya\u00f1ez, who continues the artistic legacy of his father, Ren\u00e9 Ya\u00f1ez. \u201cMy father, Ren\u00e9 Ya\u00f1ez, was one of the curators of the first wave of D\u00eda de los Muertos art exhibits and programming in the mid-\u201970s in the Mission District,\u201d Rio said, crediting his father for helping pioneer the idea of altars as art installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAn art installation honoring Palestinian life and resistance is displayed at SOMArts\u2019 We Love You altar exhibition in San Francisco, Calif., on Oct. 10, 2025. Photo: Erika Carlos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nBorn and raised in the Mission, Rio began assisting his father in 2005 and soon became his co-curator at SOMArts, which has since become the permanent home for their exhibition. This year marks his 20th year carrying that tradition forward while meeting the current moment. \u201cI think what\u2019s important to me about the show is that it\u2019s a way to respond as a curator and to cultivate artists,\u201d he said, \u201cto respond to what\u2019s happening in the world through honoring the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s exhibition responds to the Trump administration\u2019s attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, women\u2019s rights and immigration, interpreted through the eyes of women, queer and trans artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201dUnfortunately, as people will look at the news, [our communities] are continually attacked,\u201d said Bridg\u00e8tt Rex, co-curator of the exhibition. \u201cSo we want to give them space to be able to say their piece, be who they are, in a safe environment that SOMArts provides for us year after year.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Trump\u2019s election, Rex and Ya\u00f1ez shaped the \u201cWe Love You\u201d theme as both resistance and affirmation. \u201cThere\u2019s so much emotional warfare in the news, lots of bullying,\u201d Rex said. \u201cWe Love You is the antidote to that bullying and to the fear being imposed upon our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nAn egg-shaped altar honoring transgender lives is displayed at SOMArts\u2019 We Love You altar exhibition in San Francisco, Calif., on Oct. 10, 2025. Photo: Erika Carlos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nYa\u00f1ez said he\u2019s proud that the exhibition includes both traditional altars and modern, conceptual pieces that challenge what mourning and remembrance can look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One striking example is an egg-shaped altar that visitors can sit inside, representing transgender people who died before coming out or completing their transitions. The egg is wrapped in fabric covered with pasted news clippings about trans issues, including a headline on the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to ban gender-affirming care for minors and a vintage article titled, \u201cTragic story of a girl who wants to be a man.\u201d In a Sharpie-red statement in all caps is the question, \u201cHow many of us would there be if things were different?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside the egg, several chairs face an altar made of charcoal drawings of faces and bodies, alongside a statement that reads: \u201cWe honor those who died in the egg, who never had a chance to live their truth, who never found an answer to the feeling of wrongness in their souls, and who are buried under false names. To those souls, We Love You.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photo: Erika Carlos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nAnother altar, titled \u201cMemento (ME)mori(as),\u201d reflects on intergenerational trauma. It honors people \u201cwho had to rebuild after our families tried to break us.\u201d Constructed with black chalkboard walls, the installation invites visitors to write down a \u201cgenerational curse\u201d they want to break using vibrant chalk markers, or to hang a note on a green wire mimicking a vine. One panel reads simply: \u201cWe are not our ancestors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Created by Chicana artist Liv Styler, the altar was created for people \u201cwho’ve been brave enough to walk away from family, or replant their own roots.\u201d Styler said she was nervous no one would connect with her work, even arriving late to the opening. Photo: Erika Carlos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nFor Ya\u00f1ez, creating altars at home every year since childhood paved the way for embracing reinterpretation: \u201cIt was never bound by any sort of rules or things that had to be there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His advice to first-time altar-makers: \u201cIt\u2019s entirely up to you. Whatever feels right and good. There\u2019s no need to be intimidated. Just leave something personal and meaningful for someone you want to honor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
