En su regazo, posa una gorra de los Giants con la que recolecta monedas. Un transe\u00fante desconocido se acerca y le entrega una bolsa de pupusas calientes; \u00e9l agradece y la guarda en su bolso negro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMe siento culpable haciendo esto porque no estoy acostumbrado a este tipo de vida\u201d, dijo este hombre que ha trabajado toda su vida. \u201cPero a veces la necesidad te obliga\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En busca de trabajo, Jacento lleg\u00f3 a San Francisco y se uni\u00f3 a los jornaleros de la ciudad: hombres que esperan en las esquinas por trabajos de pintura, jardiner\u00eda o demolici\u00f3n. En su opini\u00f3n, estos jornaleros rara vez reciben la capacitaci\u00f3n adecuada o el equipo de seguridad necesario. \u201cSon trabajos que no est\u00e1n certificados y un gran problema que vemos a menudo es tambi\u00e9n el robo de salarios\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La fr\u00e1gil estabilidad de este empleo informal se derrumb\u00f3 para Jacento en octubre de 2022. Hab\u00eda aceptado un trabajo de mudanza clandestino por 200 d\u00f3lares. Mientras pon\u00eda cargamento en un cami\u00f3n, un equipo pesado le cay\u00f3 encima, aplast\u00e1ndole la pierna izquierda y el tel\u00e9fono que llevaba en el bolsillo. &#8220;Recuerdo que me dec\u00edan: &#8216;No te duermas, no te duermas'&#8221;, comenta. Foto: Pablo Unzueta para <em>El Tecolote <\/em>\/ CatchLight Local.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A los que se enfrenta Jacento se remontan a su infancia en Guatemala: su madre y padre fueron v\u00edctimas de desplazamiento durante la guerra civil y despojados de sus tierras. Con la llegada de los Acuerdos de Paz en 1996, la familia recibi\u00f3 una peque\u00f1a parcela de la Uni\u00f3n Europea y estableci\u00f3 una finca de caf\u00e9 en Chimaltenango. A la edad de diez a\u00f1os, ya trabajaba al lado de su padre, cultivando la mayor parte de sus alimentos. A pesar de las dificultades, logr\u00f3 asistir a la escuela gracias a la herencia de su abuelo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pero en Guatemala, la educaci\u00f3n no era una garant\u00eda para un futuro mejor. A sus veinte a\u00f1os, se vio obligado a aceptar cualquier trabajo en mercados y granjas, ganando apenas 130 d\u00f3lares al mes. &#8220;Siempre quisimos tener una casa, comprar un auto. As\u00ed que luchar por una vida mejor en Guatemala fue dif\u00edcil&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 2019, le dijo a su familia que necesitaba irse. Su hermano menor ya hab\u00eda emigrado a Chicago, pero fue detenido por el ICE y deportado. &#8220;Lo que finalmente me impuls\u00f3 a irme fue mi problema con el alcoholismo. S\u00f3lo necesitaba un cambio para m\u00ed y aprender nuevos oficios\u201d, reconoci\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery aligncenter has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped En su mejor momento, lleg\u00f3 a ganar $400 diarios, con propinas incluidas, pero esos trabajos eran inestables. Con la llegada de la pandemia por el COVID-19 perdi\u00f3 su horario fijo, y para 2022, estaba trabajando en la informalidad para una gran constructora percibiendo $25 por hora, por debajo de la mesa. Lo que sigui\u00f3 fue un accidente que no olvidar\u00eda: una m\u00e1quina de tres toneladas cay\u00f3 sobre la camioneta de alquiler donde estaba. Hasta el d\u00eda de hoy, no recuerda el tipo de m\u00e1quina, solo el peso y el da\u00f1o devastador que caus\u00f3.&#8221;\u00bfC\u00f3mo pudo esta m\u00e1quina aplastarme todos los huesos de la pierna, pero no el pecho?
