And it’s heartbreaking to see what’s happening now,\u201d said Juanita Contreras, 70, a former union organizer who attended the morning rally in the Mission District. \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be hard to build it up again. It\u2019ll take time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Bertha, a domestic worker who has been in San Francisco for 34 years, rebuilding starts with standing up for her rights. She\u2019s in the process of sorting out her legal status, she said, but despite her fears, it was important to attend May Day events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want people to know that they shouldn\u2019t be scared, that we can push forward if we support each other,\u201d said the Mujeres Unidas y Activas member. \u201cIt\u2019s important to be here and show that we\u2019re united.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nJuanita Contreras stands next to large banners during a morning May Day rally at the 24th Street Bart Plaza. \u201cMany people go out to the street scared that they might be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and face deportation because they\u2019re looking for another person,\u201d said Sa\u00fal J., a longtime welder. He said he\u2019s been closely following the case of Kilmar Abrego Garc\u00eda, a longtime U.S. resident who was deported to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador due to an administrative error.<\/p>\n\n\n\nJose Robles, 74, a retired janitor at a school, stands at Garfield Square Park in San Francisco, Calif., on May 1, 2025. \u201cYou can have documents and they will still deport you,\u201d Robles said, regarding his concerns on the country\u2019s political climate. Photo: Pablo Unzueta for El Tecolote\/CatchLight Local<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nTo Henry, a Mexican food vendor who sells chips and shaved ice, San Francisco\u2019s sanctuary city ordinance has offered only momentary relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s worrying, but so far, nothing has happened here,\u201d said Henry, who moved to the city four months ago from Los Angeles following a crackdown on street vendors. \u201cBut at the same time, it doesn\u2019t really matter, right? Whether we\u2019re working or not, something can happen at any moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the May Day rally in the Civic Center that evening, where hundreds of people marched to ICE headquarters, many local unions and grassroots organizations spoke in support of immigrant workers. Kim Evon, executive vice president at SEIU Local 2015, said many of the more than half a million people her union represents are first- and second-generation immigrants working as long-term caregivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To support them, Evon said the union has hosted hundreds of presentations in recent months to educate workers about their legal rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, some worry these campaigns may not be enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSometimes I wonder what I would do if I got detained,\u201d said Jos\u00e9 Robles, 74, a retired janitor. \u201cI\u2019ve heard they\u2019ve picked up people with documents. Thankfully I became a citizen, but what would that matter if they just picked me up without asking anything?
