{"id":64993,"date":"2025-04-04T12:17:42","date_gmt":"2025-04-04T19:17:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?p=64993"},"modified":"2025-04-07T16:17:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T23:17:51","slug":"sf-art-exhibition-mass-sanctuaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-art-exhibition-mass-sanctuaries\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Mass Sanctuaries\u2019 exhibition turns art into refuge for immigrant communities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In uncertain times, what does sanctuary look like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mass Sanctuaries<\/em>, a new art exhibition opening April 18 at Acci\u00f3n Latina, offers a bold affirmation: no matter where we\u2019re from, we are already home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCreating a safe environment where people can share without fear is a vulnerable and beautiful thing,\u201d said Jennifer Velasquez Mendoza, an exhibition contributor. \u201cNow more than ever, we need to support our community of immigrants, our neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/mass-sanctuaries-arte-inmigrantes-sf\/\">Lea esta historia en espa\u00f1ol.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a cultural moment filled with fear-mongering and deep uncertainty for Latinx and immigrant communities, sanctuary evokes a vital sense of refuge. A moment to breathe instead of holding one\u2019s breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe work itself becomes a sanctuary,\u201d adds artist Mabel Valdiviezo. \u201cBoth in the act of art-making that radiates dignity and healing, and in the viewer\u2019s experience, where emotions of safety and belonging are absorbed and released.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/mass-sanctuaries-sf-art-show\/\">open call<\/a> for submissions yielded more than 70 works, the majority by immigrants or first-generation Americans. Over half of the selected pieces were created by women. The first wall centers on family, grounding the immigrant experience in a broader relational context with elders, children, and loved ones near and far. More than thirty pieces include personal photographs: fathers holding children, people dancing, and snapshots of joy, honor and everyday life. \u201cOur elders provide us with solace, kindness, and wisdom,\u201d said artist Luis Garcia, \u201cin knowing that our strength lies with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of the gallery, a central wall proclaims Mass Sanctuary, with works that explore how refuge can be physical, emotional, or symbolic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final wall looks forward, toward both challenge and hope. Some pieces grapple with the dangers of a surveillance state, while others dream boldly: families reunited, surrealist joy and scenes of collective care. \u201cThe story doesn\u2019t end here,\u201d said co-curator Rebeca Flores.
