{"id":64567,"date":"2025-03-10T15:44:57","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T22:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?p=64567"},"modified":"2025-03-27T17:23:30","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T00:23:30","slug":"sf-homeless-family-shelter-evictions-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-homeless-family-shelter-evictions-rally\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Our time is over\u2019: Homeless mothers fight S.F. shelter evictions at rally"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dozens of mothers, educators and advocates gathered in front of Flynn Elementary School Monday morning to protest the scheduled eviction of two homeless families from a San Francisco shelter \u2014 part of <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-homeless-shelter-family-evictions\/\">a reinstated city policy<\/a> that limits the time families can spend in shelters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hours after the press conference, both families were told they would receive an extension until April 10, according to Faith in Action Bay Area (FIABA), a nonprofit supporting homeless and immigrant families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey say that there\u2019s no more time,\u201d Vilma A., one of the mothers facing evictions had said earlier at the rally. \u201cThey say that our time is over.\u201d Vilma has lived at St. Joseph&#8217;s Family Center with her husband and two young children for the past eight months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maria F., a Peruvian single mother with an eight-year-old son, was also set to be evicted Monday. She said shelter staff warned her that if they didn\u2019t leave by 5 p.m., police would be called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are really scared because we don\u2019t know where we\u2019re going to spend this night \u2014 and the coming ones,\u201d Maria said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Read more: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-homeless-shelter-family-evictions\/\">S.F. is evicting homeless families from shelters. Here\u2019s what to know<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to FIABA, Vilma and Maria\u2019s families are among the first to be evicted under the city\u2019s revived policy, which limits family shelter stays to 90 days to \u201cincrease the flow of families\u201d through the shelter system. Families who meet certain requirements can apply for 30-day extensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the policy was reinstated in December, families who had already exceeded the 90-day limit received their first eviction notices, informing them they had to leave by February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) granted all families a one-month automatic extension, pushing the eviction dates to March. This month, however, extensions are being granted at each shelter\u2019s discretion. While some families have received reprieves until April, others still face imminent eviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main criteria for an extension is proof that families are actively working toward securing long-term housing. But Vilma, who has an appointment later this month to discuss a housing subsidy, said that hasn\u2019t guaranteed her more time in the shelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are in the process of securing housing,\u201d said Vilma. \u201cBut despite that they are not giving us more time to be in the shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FIABA, alongside San Francisco\u2019s public school educators\u2019 union, organized Monday\u2019s rally to call on Mayor Daniel Lurie and the Board of Supervisors to end the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo child and no family, no person deserves to sleep on the streets.
