{"id":64382,"date":"2025-02-21T13:24:26","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T21:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?p=64382"},"modified":"2025-02-21T13:59:30","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T21:59:30","slug":"sf-mission-is-not-new-tenderloin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-mission-is-not-new-tenderloin\/","title":{"rendered":"No, the Mission is not the \u2018new Tenderloin\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I was a child, maybe 9 or 10, when I saw someone shoot up in front of me for the first time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was walking with my father, who was born and raised in the Mission District, down Julian Avenue towards 16th Street when I noticed a middle-aged, disheveled white woman sitting on the sidewalk. She wasn\u2019t menacing. She wasn\u2019t vermin, the way many today would have you believe. She was simply there \u2014 her leg exposed, tied off, needle in hand. Moments later, whatever was in that syringe entered her vein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By then, I was already familiar with stories like hers. In the late 90s and early 2000s, I had spent countless nights in Narcotics Anonymous meetings across San Francisco and Oakland with my dad, who had decades of \u201cclean time\u201d under his belt. In these rooms, I had heard \u201cusing stories\u201d from people battling addiction. That day, as we walked past the woman, my father turned to me and said: \u201cThat used to be your father.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you were to believe San Francisco\u2019s new mayor \u2014 or read the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/02\/21\/the-mission-is-the-new-tenderloin\/\">latest headline<\/a> from a certain San Francisco news start-up \u2014 you\u2019d think that addiction and housing insecurity in the Mission were the unwanted hand-me-downs from the Tenderloin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They aren\u2019t.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mission and TL have long faced these struggles, not because they are inherently troubled, but because these neighborhoods have been ignored. They are neighborhoods that have long been homes to migrant and refugee communities, yet the city has tolerated their suffering \u2014 as long as it stayed within their borders and out of wealthier areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t write this to say that we should accept the pain and desperation we see every day in these neighborhoods. But we must acknowledge a hard truth: this suffering has existed for a long time. The only difference now is who it affects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, it didn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It didn\u2019t matter when it was the children of immigrants growing up alongside addiction. It didn\u2019t matter when entire families were crammed into SROs, struggling to stay afloat. It didn\u2019t matter when generations of Black and brown San Franciscans were pushed into poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it matters now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It matters now because the recently opened yoga studio is losing business. It matters now because gentrifiers believe the exorbitant rent they pay should shield them from the reality of struggle many in the city face daily. It matters now because the national narrative is that the City is lost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s the real admission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people say that the Mission has become the Tenderloin, they aren\u2019t just describing a shift \u2014 they\u2019re revealing something deeper. They\u2019re admitting that suffering in the TL was always seen as acceptable, so long as it stayed there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mission is the Mission. A neighborhood named after a<a href=\"https:\/\/planning.lacity.gov\/eir\/8150Sunset\/References\/4.C.1.%20Archaeological%20and%20Palentological%20Resources\/ARCH.07_Costo.PDF\"> genocidal project<\/a>. A neighborhood that was home to various waves of migration and <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/unsettled-in-the-mission-redlined\/\">redlining<\/a> \u2014 now a battleground of gentrification.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Saturday, I walked down Julian toward 16th with my wife and kid \u2014 the way my dad and I used to decades ago. We saw pain, yes. We saw people struggling. And every time I walk past a person who still suffers from addiction or housing insecurity, I think of my father\u2019s words. I try to tap into the empathy I felt in that moment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope others try to do the same. Because scapegoating society&#8217;s most vulnerable has never solved anything \u2014 it only deepens and prolongs the suffering.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OPINION: If you
