For Latinx communities, these tools are especially powerful. Our community often faces unique challenges, from discrimination and intergenerational trauma to the struggles of adapting to new environments. These experiences can weigh on our mental health, but they don\u2019t have to keep us from living happy and fulfilling lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/es\/querida-consejera-mental-health-column-2\/\"><em>[Lea esta historia en espa\u00f1ol.<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to the new presidential administration, <em>El Tecolote<\/em> is launching this mental health column tailored to San Francisco\u2019s Latinx communities. This space is for <em>you <\/em>\u2014 a place to explore what it means to thrive as individuals and as a community. Together, we\u2019ll talk about healing, self-care and embracing the strength rooted in our cultural practices and ancestral heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what you can expect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Advice<\/strong>: I\u2019m here to help answer questions like, \u201cMy mother enables my brother\u2019s machismo \u2014 what should I do?,\u201d \u201cMy daughter is asking me to use new pronouns \u2014 what does that mean?,\u201d or even, \u201cHow can Latinx immigrants cope with the incoming administration?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rituals and crafts<\/strong>: As a therapist who believes in using the tools our grandparents used for healing, I know how important our unique rituals are to the healing process. I\u2019ll guide you through beautiful ancient traditions, like using herbs for healing, the significance of limpias, and other activities that help us stay rooted in our culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Community Spotlights<\/strong>: I\u2019ll introduce you to places of gathering and healing in our community, like group therapy sessions for trans immigrants, healing spaces for mothers, or meaningful ceremonies like the Alcatraz Sunrise Gathering.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me introduce myself: I\u2019m Michelle Gutierrez, a bilingual, bicultural therapist of Colombian descent and a proud member of the <em>El Tecolote<\/em> family as a former Photo Editor. Now, as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I help individuals navigate challenges like anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and life transitions. My approach is compassionate and collaborative \u2014 I believe in meeting people where they are and walking with them at their own pace toward healing and growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this column, I\u2019ll share practical tools, cultural insights, and answer your questions \u2014 think of it as a culturally rooted \u201cDear Abby.\u201d Whatever\u2019s on your mind, I\u2019m here to help.
