As part of a community-led \u201cDay of Resistance,\u201d hundreds rallied in San Francisco\u2019s Mission District on Saturday, chanting, \u201cEl pueblo organizado, no ser\u00e1 deportado.\u201d With a focus on immigrant, LGBTQ+, and women\u2019s rights, the march was one of the first in a series of planned demonstrations responding to the incoming presidential administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m here for the people who can\u2019t come to this \u2014 for my family,\u201d said Jazmin Ruiz, 17, draped in a large Mexican flag. While worried that her parents might face deportation, Ruiz said seeing the community come together gave her hope. \u201cWe can\u2019t be sad,\u201d she added. \u201cWe can\u2019t be scared of that old man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The march, led by Aztec danzantes, began at 24th and Bryant Streets. Artists, musicians, and community members carried picket signs, flags and a large banner reading \u201cSomos La Resistencia\u201d as they moved through the Mission District. The event concluded at Dolores Park beneath the statue of Mexican independence leader Miguel Hidalgo, where participants gathered for a rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have to do this together,\u201d said Olga Talamante, a prominent Chicana political activist. \u201cWe have to stay united. We have to stay strong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the chants were songs urging immigrants to know their rights and remain silent when confronted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. Volunteers distributed flyers promoting upcoming immigrant workshops, meetups, and resource fairs aimed at educating and defending vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re immigrants, and we know this is a worrying time for our community,\u201d said Blanca Fabiola Catal\u00e1n, who attended the protest with her son, a DACA beneficiary. \u201cBut we\u2019re here to show Trump and everyone who is against us that we\u2019re prepared for whatever they bring our way \u2014 and that we are united.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
