{"id":63834,"date":"2025-01-09T14:39:23","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T22:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?p=63834"},"modified":"2025-01-14T12:50:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T20:50:17","slug":"sf-hotel-worker-strike-ends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-hotel-worker-strike-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"San Francisco hotel worker strike ends after 93 days"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After 93 days on the picket line, San Francisco\u2019s hotel workers secured a hard-fought victory on Christmas Eve, reaching agreements with three major hotel companies that ended the city\u2019s most severe hotel strike in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new contracts are a major win for workers at Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt properties, who secured all their core demands: wage and pension increases, protections against excessive workloads and preserving their health insurance plan, according to UNITE HERE Local 2, the hospitality workers union.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When workers first went to the bargaining table in August, the three hotel companies, negotiating as a bloc, <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/hotel-worker-strike-san-francisco\/\">proposed <\/a>reducing healthcare benefits and retirement contributions, the union told<em> El Tecolote<\/em>. Workers also raised concerns about growing job cuts and increased workloads for remaining staff, often without additional compensation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reaching a stalemate, hundreds of workers at three major hotels near Union Square walked off the job in late September. Over the following months, the strike grew to include six hotels and 2,500 workers, becoming the \u201cthe longest multi-hotel strike\u201d the city has seen in modern history, said Local 2 spokesperson Ted Waechter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From early morning to late evening, dozens of striking workers marched outside the hotels, their drum beats and chants echoing through downtown. Photo: Pablo Unzueta for El Tecolote\/CatchLight Local<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the strike, workers and union organizers urged hotel companies to stop perpetuating San Francisco\u2019s \u201cdoom loop\u201d and to invest in the city\u2019s recovery instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe feel good, because we\u2019re fighting for our rights,\u201d Tania Barraza, a steward at the Hilton Union Square said during the strike. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a catastrophic fall for businesses. San Francisco isn\u2019t what it was before, but by investing in the city, more work and more tourists will come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For weeks, the strike seemed like it had no end in sight, as workers promised to picket through the busy holiday season and into the new year, and more workers at other hotels threatened to join the strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marriott finally returned to the bargaining table in mid-December, and after five days of negotiations, the hotel reached an agreement with Local 2 on Dec. 19. Photo: Pablo Unzueta for El Tecolote\/CatchLight Local<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, the agreement was struck with the help of incoming mayor Daniel Lurie, who, according to labor leaders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/joegarofoli\/article\/daniel-lurie-good-start-helps-end-s-f-marriott-19991980.php\">made calls to key hotel owners<\/a> during the strike\u2019s final weeks to help \u201cget the ball rolling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis historic resolution will positively impact not only our economy, but also our working families, our hospitality industry, and all San Franciscans,\u201d Lurie said on an Instagram post celebrating Marriot\u2019s agreement with the union.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution comes at a crucial time for San Francisco\u2019s beleaguered hospitality sector, which is expected to bounce back in 2025 with a projected<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sftravel.com\/media\/press-release\/san-francisco%E2%80%99s-convention-business-to-rebound-2025-group-hotel-room-nights\"> surge in conventions<\/a>. These events could also provide an economic boost to the city\u2019s small businesses and restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union hopes the deal will set a precedent for hotel workers citywide as they enter contract talks with other full-service hotels in 2025 \u2013 and they say more strikes aren\u2019t off the table if these hotels don\u2019t agree to similar terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we showed them is that we are absolutely unbreakable,\u201d Waechter said. \u201cHotel workers in San Francisco are tough [and] ready for a
