Born and raised in the Mission District, the barrio star and singer-songwriter blends her care for culture and community with a bold, socially conscious sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 8, La Do\u00f1a headlined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/encuentro-del-canto-popular-tickets-951085360917?aff=oddtdtcreator&amp;comeFrom=242&amp;artist_event_id=106024703&amp;bit_userid=%24%7Buser_id%7D&amp;appId=wf_jjj.ynqban415.pbz\">Encuentro Del Canto Popular<\/a>, a music festival at The Chapel (777 Valencia St.) hosted by Acci\u00f3n Latina, the nonprofit publisher of <em>El Tecolote<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so important for us to remember what it means to come together,\u201d La Do\u00f1a told <em>El Tecolote<\/em>. \u201cTo use culture and music, and all of the beautiful things that we share to promote social change and community \u2014 because right now it\u2019s just not a party.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An album with a purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Do\u00f1a\u2019s signature style fuses traditional Mexican music like cumbia, bolero, and mariachi with reggaeton, hip-hop, and jazz. Known for her liberating and sexually charged lyrics, her work centers a Brown Skin Latinx perspective critics have dubbed \u201cFemmet\u00f3n.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her debut album, Los Altos De La Soledad, released in September, transforms her \u201csex with a smile\u201d image into a politically charged collection of songs addressing today\u2019s most pressing issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tracks like \u201cCorrido Palestina,\u201d about the genocide in Gaza, and \u201cEl Regreso,\u201d a lament of a Guatemalan immigrant longing to return home, showcase her growing maturity and ambition as an artist. Other highlights include \u201cCorrales,\u201d tackling police brutality, and the romantic bolero \u201cEsta Noche Coraz\u00f3n,\u201d a duet with Dominican artist Yasser Tejada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really important for us in these moments, as artists, to not just make music that\u2019s timeless,\u201d said La Do\u00f1a. \u201cBut to write songs that can be listened to 100 years from now and still feel relevant, songs that really capture a moment in time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A rising star \u2014 interrupted<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Do\u00f1a\u2019s rise hasn\u2019t been easy. In 2020, she was poised to break through with her first EP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/03\/15\/815445340\/la-do-a-on-algo-nuevo-feminist-reggaeton-and-teaching-mariachi-in-schools\">Algo Nuevo<\/a><em>,<\/em> and a national tour. But the pandemic brought her momentum to a halt, leaving her without distribution for her independently produced music and hustling to find gigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, La Do\u00f1a reclaimed her momentum, performing at South by Southwest, Outside Lands, and Stern Grove, and headlining The Fillmore. Photo: Ximena Natera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An enduring legacy of music and activism&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The youngest daughter of the Pe\u00f1a-Govea musical family, Cecilia grew up surrounded by music. Her father Miguel led the Mission District band Los Compas, her mother Susan balanced civil rights work with playing guitar, and her sister Ren\u00e9 is a master of the accordion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cecilia got the bug early, choosing trumpet and singing as her preferred modes of making music. Musical training at the Community Music Center and in-school programs prepared her for a career in music, but it was her tenacity and \u201cSi Se Puede\u201d spirit that made her La Do\u00f1a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did she land on that stage name? \u201cThe short answer is because I\u2019m bossy,\u201d Cecilia said, laughing. \u201cI have the personality of a mom and a person who is going to cook for you, but \u2018can you please clean your stuff up\u2019? That\u2019s how it started, and one of my home girls started calling me La Do\u00f1a. When I was looking for an artist\u2019s name I was like, OK, let\u2019s try it out and it stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When not performing, Cecilia teaches mariachi through SF Unified School District and SFJAZZ. She also writes grants and secures fellowships to fund her projects while maintaining her independence. \u201cI\u2019m tapping into resources to support art that would otherwise be censored,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pushing a movement forward<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immortalized in a mural at 26th and Mission, La Do\u00f1a is one of the Mission\u2019s crown jewels \u2014 a symbol of resilience and cultural pride. With <em>Los Altos De La Soledad,<\/em> she continues to amplify the voices of immigrant workers and marginalized communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For La Do\u00f1a, music is more than a performance \u2014 it\u2019s a movement. \u201cRight now, it\u2019s just not a party,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s about promoting social change and building community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The 43rd Encuentro del Canto Popular concert was presented by <\/em>El Tecolote\u2019s <em>nonprofit publisher Acci\u00f3n Latina at The Chapel (777 Valencia St) in San Francisco on Sunday, Dec. 8th.
