Here\u2019s what\u2019s next \u2014 and how you can support us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>2024 was a transformative year for <em>El Tecolote<\/em>. Over the past 12 months, our bilingual community newsroom worked tirelessly to deliver culturally relevant local news during a high-stakes election year \u2014 all while charting a new path in how we serve Latinx communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, we welcomed a <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/erika-carlos-editor-in-chief-el-tecolote\/\">new editor-in-chief<\/a>, and committed to three big changes: prioritizing digital-first and visually-rich storytelling, launching a program to train the next generation of journalists and fostering deeper relationships with our community to inform our coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These efforts paid off. We grew our website visits by 53%, expanded our presence on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/eltecolotesf\">Instagram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@eltecolotesf\">YouTube<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@eltecolotesf\">TikTok<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ElTecoloteSF\">Facebook<\/a>, and saw <em>El Tecolote\u2019s<\/em> reporting cited by major publications like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/s-f-eyes-homeless-crackdown-with-rv-ban-plan-19763481.php\"><em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/11\/18\/san-francisco-trump-mass-deportation-plans\/\"><em>San Francisco Standard<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C7j8LbyPCZ5\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\"><em>NPR<\/em><\/a>. Our work was also republished by partners such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/11986724\/after-months-long-coma-this-latino-immigrant-worker-is-still-fighting-mysterious-symptoms\"><em>KQED<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/48hills.org\/2024\/07\/westside-rv-residents-take-over-zoo-parking-lot\/\"><em>48Hills<\/em><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfpublicpress.org\/after-months-long-coma-this-latino-immigrant-worker-is-still-fighting-mysterious-symptoms\/\">S<em>an Francisco Public Press<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we\u2019re just getting started. The coming year will test the resiliency of the most vulnerable members of our communities, but we are committed to providing information that is useful, culturally relevant, accessible and uplifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your support is crucial to help us continue this vital work. Photo: Veronica Brehmer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Building the next generation of journalists<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its founding in 1970, <em>El Tecolote<\/em> has been a training ground for emerging journalists of color. Photo: Pablo Unzueta for El Tecolote\/CatchLight Local<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Community-centered election coverage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this pivotal election year, we relaunched <em>The Pueblo\u2019s Agenda<\/em>, our civic engagement project designed to make local election information accessible to bilingual communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our election coverage focused on the District 9 race, inviting our readers to <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/district-9-election-what-should-el-tecolote-ask-supervisor-candidates\/\">help shape<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/d9-supervisor-election-questions-response\/\">questions<\/a> that we asked candidates hoping to represent the historically Latinx neighborhoods that make up District 9. We published candidate responses on a rolling basis across our platforms, including our print newspaper, <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/news\/elections\/\">website<\/a> and bilingual social media videos on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL98PP-TeKIesgcUgBrRvnotFn_HrWhuV-\">YouTube<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DARFIMLPoY_\/?img_index=1\">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ElTecoloteSF\/posts\/pfbid0QDvTeLV7tPZNdPPzvedi5az36DFhrQsjyayFmCYTzXaVigoDUQiUYWptokVLKpWul\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid ongoing challenges in SFUSD, we produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/noncitizen-voting-election-sf\/\">guide for noncitizen voters<\/a> on how to vote in the school board election. We also published a Spanish-language <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-election-2024-spanish-voter-guide\/\">voter guide<\/a> in a special print edition of <em>El Tecolote<\/em>. In partnership with <em>CalMatters<\/em> and <em>KQED<\/em>, we highlighted some of the most relevant races and ballot measures for our readers, prioritizing distribution in key Latinx neighborhoods like the Mission, Excelsior, Tenderloin, and Bayview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Election Day, we provided social-first coverage that centered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DCA68yBpR5H\/\">Latinx voters<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DCAlLX0yuC3\/\">District 9 supervisor race<\/a>, and we were the first to call the election for <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/district-9-supervisor-jackie-fielder-2024\/\">Jackie Fielder<\/a>. Photo: Pablo Unzueta for El Tecolote\/CatchLight Local<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In-depth coverage of San Francisco\u2019s Latinx RV community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of <em>El Tecolote\u2019s<\/em> core strengths is building trust with Latinx communities, working closely with them to report on the issues affecting their lives in order to hold leaders accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our initial coverage of Latinx RV residents living in <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-parking-ban-bernal-heights-boulevard\/\">Bernal Heights<\/a> evolved into an eight-month, in-depth and visually-rich documentary of how <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/winston-drive-rv-community-sf-state\/\">working-class families<\/a> fought to maintain their <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/winston-drive-rv-sf-zoo\/\">fragile stability<\/a> amid <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-rv-oversized-vehicle-ban\/\">policies<\/a> designed to displace them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/displaced-rv-community-sf\/\">people-first reporting<\/a> and public records requests, we exposed the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-rv-oversized-vehicle-ban\/\">accelerated RV ban<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-rv-ban-enforcement-challenges\/\">failure<\/a> to meet its intended goals. We shared powerful stories and visuals across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C8nDo9By6fb\/?img_index=3\">Instagram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@eltecolotesf\/video\/7404684418905902378\">TikTok<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=juC3rTkb-e0\">YouTube<\/a>, while staying connected with RV residents through a WhatsApp group that provided real-time updates and a <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/sf-rv-towing-policy-nov-1\/\">guide<\/a> on policy changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>El Tecolote<\/em> is the official newspaper for us,\u201d said Angela Arosteguis, an RV resident displaced from Winston Drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our RV coverage became one of our most-read series of the year, cited by outlets like the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/09\/13\/recreational-vehicle-parking-ban\/\">San Francisco Standard<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/s-f-eyes-homeless-crackdown-with-rv-ban-plan-19763481.php\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>. This grassroots approach has cemented <em>El Tecolote\u2019s <\/em>reputation as a trusted source for in-depth, community-driven journalism.
