{"id":62748,"date":"2024-10-10T11:49:40","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T18:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?p=62748"},"modified":"2024-10-14T12:09:53","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T19:09:53","slug":"esoterica-tropical-new-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/esoterica-tropical-new-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Esot\u00e9rica Tropical: \u2018Cosmic, queer islander\u2019 weaves music, healing and resistance in new album"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Maria Jose Montijo, known as \u201cMajo,\u201d embraces her identity as a \u201ccosmic, queer islander,\u201d weaving her experiences as a migrant, healer, and Puerto Rican woman into her debut album, Esot\u00e9rica Tropical. \u201cIt\u2019s all about protecting the Earth,\u201d said Majo of the title track. \u201cBut it\u2019s also a song of belonging \u2026 As a migrant living in California, I feel like this place loves me back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Majo\u2019s life and music are deeply intertwined with her spiritual practices. She\u2019s a trained acupuncturist, performs \u201cbiodynamic cranial, sacral work,\u201d and has studied Qigong and Tai Chi. \u201cI have this deep desire to heal, and my music is part of my healing journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esot\u00e9rica Tropical, Majo said, describes the kind of music that she does: medicinal, political, and very earnest. Her group will perform in San Francisco on December 8 at The Chapel during the <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/encuentro-del-canto-popular-2024\/\">43rd annual Encuentro del Canto Popular<\/a>, hosted by <em>El Tecolote\u2019s <\/em>nonprofit publisher, Acci\u00f3n Latina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blending ancestral traditions with modern sounds, Esot\u00e9rica Tropical\u2019s ensemble includes Majo as the lead vocalist, Denise Solis on the Afro-Puerto Rican barril drum, and lush harmonies from Karla Rivera and Grace Guerrero. Together, they create a sonic landscape that is both grounding and otherworldly, merging the earth\u2019s pulse with cosmic vibrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Realismo M\u00e1gico (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2c4oBsPLSeU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A journey through sound and spirit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Majo grew up singing with the prestigious Coro de Ni\u00f1os de San Juan, a children\u2019s choir that toured internationally. \u201cIt was super intense,\u201d said Majo, adding that she would practice nine hours a week, but \u201cgot to travel all over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While swimming at San Juan\u2019s El Escambr\u00f3n Beach, a lifeguard friend asked, \u201cWhat are you doing with music?\u201d Majo admitted she hadn\u2019t been performing. The next day, that friend handed her a harp from the trunk of their car\u2014an unexpected gift that would forever change her music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Finding community \u2014 and Bomba \u2014 in the Bay Area<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Oakland, Majo\u2019s immersion in Bomba \u2014 the Afro-Boricua drum and dance tradition \u2014 further shaped her artistic identity. The album includes collaborations with Bomba legends like Jes\u00fas \u201cEl Tambor Mayor\u201d Cepeda, Latin jazz virtuoso Charlie Gurke, and indie powerhouse Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards, alongside cutting-edge electronic producers like Luis Maurette (Uji), Heidi Lewandowski (Kaleema), and Adam Partridge (Atropolis). Across ten tracks, Majo fuses traditional Afro-Boricua rhythms with modern electronic sounds to convey messages of environmental and social justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy songs are medicinal,\u201d Majo explains. \u201cI\u2019m in the process of decolonizing my heart, body, and mind. Colonization is still very real \u2014 what\u2019s happening in Puerto Rico is a slow kind of genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Esot\u00e9rica Tropical, Majo offers more than just an album\u2014it\u2019s an offering of love, healing, and resistance.
