{"id":58860,"date":"2023-12-14T11:58:14","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T19:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?p=58860"},"modified":"2023-12-14T11:58:17","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T19:58:17","slug":"a-theatrical-attempt-to-tell-the-colonial-history-of-puerto-rico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/a-theatrical-attempt-to-tell-the-colonial-history-of-puerto-rico\/","title":{"rendered":"A theatrical attempt to tell the colonial history of Puerto Rico"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Puerto Rico has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/puerto-rico-series-part-2-puerto-ricans-and-a-legacy-of-second-class-citizenship\/\">colony<\/a> of the United States since 1898, and earlier this year, the House of Representatives introduced a bill on whether the island should become a state or gain independence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Puerto Rico Status Act would allow voters in the U.S. territory the options of statehood, independence and independence and sovereignty in free association with the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This summer, the United Nations Special Political and Decolonization Committee, approved a resolution reaffirming Puerto Rico&#8217;s right to <a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2023\/gacol3372.doc.htm\">Self-determination<\/a>. Photo: Katherine Castillo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>La Lengua Teatro\u2019s founding Artistic Director, Virginia Blanco, said the second edition of the Decolonization Stories Festival is focusing on Puerto Rico. This continuing project showcases how colonization is still occurring throughout Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are interested in hearing the experiences of people living in Puerto Rico and why people are wanting to leave because it\u2019s difficult for them to have the life they want there,\u201d Blanco said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The call to receive writing samples from playwrights was open from Nov. 1 to Dec. 10.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn February next year, we will have a panel to decide the finalists and announce the names in March and the playwright residency will happen remotely between April and July,\u201d Blanco said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The candidates chosen will write a one-act play each and have the freedom to pick a topic that allows the audience to connect with the people of Puerto Rico and the complex relationship between the United States.
