Photo: Jeremy Word<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t know they robbed him [from] our family, \u2026 they didn\u2019t know they robbed him [from] this community,\u201d said Michelle Monterrosa, the sister of Sean Monterrosa, the unarmed 22-year-old who was murdered by a Vallejo police officer in 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family, friends, and community gathered at the Mission bookstore Medicine for Nightmares on Saturday, April 29 to celebrate Sean, also known as Tucan, on what would have been his 25th birthday. Photo: Jeremy Word<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sean was killed three years ago by officer Jarrett Tonn, who shot Monterrosa five times outside of a Vallejo Walgreens through the front window of a police vehicle while Monterrosa kneeled with his hands raised during a protest for George Floyd. The case gained national attention in the midst of continued police brutality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Sean\u2019s sisters, Michelle and Ashley, wanted to celebrate Sean through one of his passions \u2014 art.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was just an idea \u2026 what would it look like to do a Tucan\u2019s pop-up? \u2026 In that moment we started pulling all the pieces we had at home, we put a call out for artists if they wanted to submit anything \u2026 and it just happened,\u201d Michelle told <em>El Tecolote.<\/em> \u201cWe wanted to bring two worlds together \u2014 my brother&#8217;s art world and the work we do for him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20230429_SF_TECO_Tucan_03_edited_web.jpg?resize=1200%2C720&#038;quality=89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Family, friends and loving community members attend Tucan\u2019s World, an arts pop-up held at the Mission District bookstore Medicine for Nightmares on April 29. The pieces reflected their own passions and interpretations of police brutality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe humanized who Sean is, \u2019cause the media doesn\u2019t do that,\u201d Michelle said. \u201cMany times our loved ones are not ever seen as survivors and victims, so it\u2019s our job to humanize.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pop-up Tucan\u2019s World event, the Monterrosa sisters gave speeches discussing Sean\u2019s life and their motivations to create Tucan\u2019s World as a way to represent his legacy. Photo: Jeremy Word<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe meant so much to me \u2014 he transformed my life,\u201d said Nancy Abdul-Shakur, who worked closely with Sean at a youth program at Horizons Unlimited, a community-based San Francisco organization. \u201cAfter his loss, it really focused my energy to continue to be a source of access to resources for young people. And to keep pushing them to be their better selves the way Sean would have wanted \u2026 I aspire to continue his legacy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Sean&#8217;s death, the Monterrosa sisters have fought tirelessly against continued police violence against Black and brown folks. Their path has been an arduous one \u2014 from speaking on the steps of City Hall, demanding justice and policy reform to getting arrested in front of Governor Newsom\u2019s house. Photo: Jeremy Word<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSean really guides us to do this work,\u201d Michelle told <em>El Tecolote. <\/em>\u201cNothing we do is without him<em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This continued pattern of police violence has motivated a generation to bring about change and care. Photo: Jeremy Word<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe tell our stories \u2026 and put our stories into policy changes,\u201d Michelle said. \u201cWe know the investments we need in our community to repair the harm and also reimagine what public safety looks like. We don\u2019t want more incarceration. We don\u2019t want more police in our community\u2026 [And] we need to support young people because, at the end of the day, young people are the center of every monumental change that we\u2019ve seen,\u201d Michelle said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley added, \u201cTo have the next generation of young people be here and support \u2026 it\u2019s really just a labor of love.
