The 65th Annual San Francisco Film Festival<\/a>, back in theaters for the first time in three years, is showcasing films from across Central and South America in their Cine Latino competition<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The films included in the competition are diverse in geography, scope and perspective, yet common themes emerge. Workplace conflict is palpable \u2014 and dangerous \u2014 in films like Lorenzo Vigas\u2019s \u201cThe Box,\u201d<\/a> shot mostly in the Chihuahuan state of Mexico, and Mando Nieto\u2019s third feature \u201cThe Employer and the Employee,\u201d<\/a> which takes place on an Uruguayan farm near the Brazilian border. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the open landscapes, a sense of entrapment looms in \u201cThe Box,\u201d whether literal (main character Hatzin stuck in a bus restroom; his father\u2019s ashes trapped in a large metal container) or metaphorical (stuck in the past; trapped in a toxic work environment). Hatzin Navarette delivers a masterful performance as Hatzin, his inscrutable and brooding face providing a constant sense of doom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luisa, the main character in Javier Andrade\u2019s second feature film \u201cLo Invisible,\u201d<\/a> is confined instead by mental anguish. She suffers from an intense bout of postpartum depression, and despite the luxurious lifestyle she leads among the Ecuadorian uppercrust, she is unable to connect with anyone other than the nanny who took care of her as a girl (and still massages her feet). As her anguish builds, Luisa engages in destructive behaviors that threaten to push everyone away from her. The film speaks to the invisibility that women often endure as they age and become mothers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the world feels stifling and claustrophobic, there\u2019s always the possibility of escape. Gabriel Martins\u2019s charming film \u201cMars One\u201d<\/a> highlights the dreams of Deivinho, a young boy who fantasizes about colonizing Mars. Main character Daniel in Aly Muritiba\u2019s film \u201cPrivate Desert\u201d<\/a> flees his ailing policeman father by going on a road trip in search of a girl he knows only from a screen. Winner of the BNL People\u2019s Choice Award at the Venice Film Festival, \u201cPrivate Desert\u201d interrogates the toxic trappings of masculinity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the films in competition are filled with hope as well as despair. Catalina Razzini\u2019s \u201cSun and Daughter\u201d<\/a> beautifully captures a young girl\u2019s dream \u2014 and an absolutely adorable llama \u2014 as she scripts about a rendezvous with her father. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rounding out the competition is \u201cThe Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future,\u201d<\/a> a film that defies categorization. Francisca Alegr\u00eda\u2019a first feature is an ecological tale with a supernatural component, as a matriarch \u2014 dead by suicide \u2014 emerges from a local river with poisoned fish to haunt her family. Alegr\u00eda beautifully weaves in queer identity, maternal longing, and generational conflict into the narrative. The dairy in the film, inspired by the director\u2019s experience on her grandparent\u2019s farm, includes cows that are mesmerizing on screen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI did nothing,\u201d Alegr\u00eda said after the screening at the Roxie Theater. \u201cThe cows are the most natural actors.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner of the competition highlighting Latin American films will be announced April 30 in a virtual award ceremony<\/a>, and the winning film will have an encore screening<\/a> at the Roxie Theater<\/a> in the Mission on Sunday, May 1 at 4:30 pm. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
