Johnson in 1968 to celebrate the cultures and folks from Latin America. While progressive then, the recognition also imposed a damaging image of homogeneity onto a diverse group of South, Central, and North American Latinx peoples, further marginalizing Indigenous and Afro Latinx communities. In efforts to rewrite this narrative, El Tecolote interviewed leaders of Chavalos de Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1 and Tradici\u00f3n Peruana, two organizations who participated in Calle 24\u2019s \u201cFiesta de las Am\u00e9ricas.\u201d In sharing their stories, we hope to recognize what Latinx communities have always known: only by recognizing difference can we achieve unity.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery time that I have gone or moved places, I have tried to look, as we always do\u2026 for community,\u201d said Diana Aburto Vega, artistic director of Danzas por Nicaragua at <a href=\"https:\/\/chavalo.org\">Chavalos<\/a>, an organization that promotes Nicaraguan cultural arts and provides humanitarian aid to transnational Nicaraguan communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vega danced folklore professionally in Nicaragua before immigrating to the United States and later moving to the Bay Area, where she began dancing with Chavalos in 2010.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vega describes dance as both \u201cthe highest expression of [Nicaraguan] culture\u201d and \u201ca form of community outreach.\u201d \u201cWe try to stay as authentic as possible when it comes to all of our artistic expressions and representations,\u201d Vega explains. To do this, Vega incorporates Nicaraguan paintings, drawings, and pottery into performances and coordinates artistic exchanges, inviting Nicaraguan artists living domestically and abroad to perform in San Francisco. During COVID-19, Chavalos collaborated with Mission Meals to feed those most impacted by COVID-19. The Mission Meals and Chavalos team \u201cwere like l\u00edderes de campesinos that started feeding the community,\u201d Vega remembers. \u201cThat was something quite beautiful\u2026we kept everything safe, everybody fed, and everybody&#8230;culturally fed as well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holistic community care is central to Chavalos\u2019 mission. Vega compares the organization\u2019s outreach to a tree\u2019s branches; equal importance is given to the creative and physical needs of the Nicaraguan community. Chavalos relied heavily on the generosity of volunteers to grow and gain sufficient visibility to receive grants and sponsorships. Yet, the passion of Chavalos\u2019 members sustains the organization. Chavalos\u2019 staff includes mituliracial Nicaraguans, those who immigrated from Nicaragua, and Nicaraguans who were born in the U.S., but \u201cif there\u2019s one thing in common that we all have,\u201d Vega said, \u201cit\u2019s that love for Nicaragua\u2026[that] is the reason why we do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because she loves her people and country, Vega must confront the reality that after 200 years of Nicaraguan independence, \u201cthe political crises that are happening in our country definitely do not represent anything that is [in line] with independence.\u201d Nicaragua\u2019s history of political instability and oppression of Indigenous peoples leads Vega to define independence in her own terms. \u201cI came to the conclusion that freedom for us Nicaraguans exists within us right now. It\u2019s not just this month.\u201d However, she also urges the dancers to remember their histories: \u201cThe person who knows their past won\u2019t repeat it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vega\u2019s own immigration story began with a mission: \u201cto bring Nicaragua to wherever I will go and to whoever I will know.\u201d While Chavalos remains one of few widely-known local organizations furthering Nicaraguan visibility, it hopes, through continuing cultural programming and humanitarian aid, to create space for future Nicaraguan cultural organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Juan de Dios Soto\u2014co-director of Tradici\u00f3n Peruana, which promotes Peruvian culture locally through caj\u00f3n and dance performances\u2014also uses art to cultivate community. Cultural arts function \u201clike a bridge for the community,\u201d Soto explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tradici\u00f3n Peruana \u201cfamilia\u201d incorporates Peruvian paintings, sculptures, and photography into exhibits in order to maintain authenticity. Photo: Katherine Castillo\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Soto learned to drum as a child, a skill transferred \u201cfrom generation to generation.\u201d For Afro Peruvians, Soto explains, \u201cdrumming isn\u2019t solely about drumming&#8230;the caj\u00f3n and la danza, for us, it\u2019s part of our cultural roots.\u201d Dance and caj\u00f3n connect not only Afro Peruvians to their heritages, but Afro Latinx folks from Haiti, Cuba, and other countries to one another, Soto adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The caj\u00f3n\u2019s transnational history, Soto explains, reflects how \u201ctalking about Latino heritage means talking about a world of learning&#8230;about the cultures of Indigenous, Black and white people.\u201d&nbsp; Afro Peruvian identity in particular \u201cis a fusion of Spanish, African and Indigenous cultures,\u201d Soto concludes.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"400\" width=\"600\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Fiestas_7230_web.jpg?resize=600%2C400&#038;quality=89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49865\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Members of Tradici\u00f3n Peruana pose for a portrait after performing at Fiesta de las Am\u00e9ricas in San Francisco&#8217;s Mission District on Sept. 18, 2021. For Soto, rediscovering the arts and rediscovering community are one: \u201cthe arts are intertwined, it\u2019s like one supports the other. Everything goes hand in hand.\u201d&nbsp; Tradici\u00f3n Peruana\u2019s Carnaval float, for example, contained various design, visual, and performance elements yet remained cohesive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding community was especially crucial during COVID-19, when artists struggled to survive financially. However, Soto recalls how Tradici\u00f3n Peruana learned \u201cother ways of creating\u2026we started teaching classes over Zoom. We began performing shows over Zoom. While Soto\u2019s original mission was to \u201cpromote Afro Peruvian culture,\u201d Soto also strives to \u201cbring together a really divided community.\u201d&nbsp; Soto urges Latinx folks to rid themselves of colonial prejudices and instead \u201cwork on building our own community and identity\u2026[and] to accept one another as we are, as Latinos, to accept our roots.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge to pursue unity while honoring differences continues to confront the Latinx community. However, as Chavalos de Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1 and Tradici\u00f3n Peruana illustrate, cultural arts can break the myth of the Latinx monolith, creating space for folks of all races and traditions to honor, remember, and celebrate their heritages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor\u2019s Note: Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, was established by President Lyndon B.
