At the 43rd annual Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards hosted by the San Francisco Press Club, El Tecolote\u2014the Bay Area\u2019s premier Latino bilingual community newspaper\u2014took home an impressive 20 awards. Judges from the press clubs of Milwaukee, New Orleans, San Diego and Cleveland evaluated this year’s entries from journalists in TV, print, radio, digital media and public relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year\u2019s event was celebrated virtually on Sept. 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe news is constantly in a state of flux,\u201d said San Francisco Press Club President Jim Kirkland. \u201cAnd now we\u2019ve had to contend with an array of disruptions. But journalists always rise to the challenge.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Press Club also honored El Tecolote\u2019s founder Juan Gonzales with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work at City College of San Francisco, which under his guidance has produced outstanding journalists and the award-winning student run newspaper, The Guardsman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Competing in the category of Non-Daily Newspapers, Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik took first place in \u201cBlog\/Commentary\u201d for her article \u201cPilgrimage to former internment camp reveals untold story of Japanese Latin American incarceration.\u201d In \u201cColumns-News\/Political,\u201d Sage Mace placed first while Adriana Camarena took second place with her \u201cUnsettled in the Mission\u201d series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In \u201cEditorial Cartoon,\u201d Yanely Rivas placed first for her comic \u201cHumanitarian aid is never a crime\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For \u201cEntertainment Review,\u201d Elissa Jim\u00e9nez placed first for her piece \u201cPinay MCs latest album challenges systemic oppression of women,\u201d and Megan Xotchilt Espinoza placed second for her article \u201cDocumenting herstory: Book captures the beauty, power of Iconic Maestrapeace mural.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In \u201cFeature Story\/Light Nature,\u201d Amanda Peterson placed second for her story \u201cAll female crew challenges gendered stereotypes of graffiti artists.\u201d In \u201cFeature Story\/Serious Nature,\u201d Casey Ticsay placed third for her story \u201cLatina therapist volunteers time at detention camps, turns experiences with migrants into art.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
