\"\"<\/a>Ce\u2022Uno\u2022One: Poems para el Nuevo Sol \/ Poems for the New Sun (Swan Scythe Press 2010) by Francisco X. Alarc\u00f3n<\/em><\/p>\n


\n<\/em><\/p>\n

I first read this book of short poems in the time it took for three BART stations to pass, my mind was calmed, reassured and lured into new and ancient realms. Ce\u2022Uno\u2022One by Francisco X. Alarc\u00f3n, meaning \u201cOne\u201d in three languages, raises the questions following me since childhood. Questions like: What will happen to my soul when I die and my body rots? Or my old favorite, \u201cWhat will happen to this inner voice I call \u2018me\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

But while I pondered the poems, written in the simplest language, I was tempted to say them aloud very quietly in the five languages they appear: English; Spanish; Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs; Mapuche, the language of indigenous people of Argentina and Chile; and Gaelic, the original language of Ireland. With my face hidden behind the book I mumbled new sounds against the hum of train. They became chants on oneness, and how it applies to my essential question about the life of the soul after death.<\/p>\n

We enter Ce\u2022Uno\u2022One strongly rooted in oneness as Francisco X. Alarc\u00f3n opens with the poetic declaration that there is only one soul in the poem \u201cOne Soul, One World.\u201d This is from his transcription of a Mapuche song sung to him at a canoe rental site in Argentina by a chief\u2019s great granddaughter. It establishes the fundamental principle that there are no individual souls just the one collective soul, of which we are all a part:<\/p>\n

the whole Earth<\/p>\n

is just one Soul<\/p>\n

we are part of her\u2013<\/p>\n

our souls cannot really die<\/p>\n

We move on to Alarc\u00f3n\u2019s own beautiful strong poems and the reader is quickly brought to the blissful state of nirvana, not wanting:<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing\u201d<\/p>\n

alone<\/p>\n

I have<\/p>\n

nothing<\/p>\n

and<\/p>\n

desire<\/p>\n

everything<\/p>\n

with you<\/p>\n

I have<\/p>\n

everything<\/p>\n

and<\/p>\n

desire<\/p>\n

nothing<\/p>\n

So few words used and so much meaning expressed.<\/p>\n

The title of the book Ce\u2022Uno\u2022One reflects three of the languages, Nahuatl, Spanish and English. The subtitle \u201cPoemas para un Nuevo Sol \/ Poems for the New Sun\u201d refers to the upcoming year 2012, which mainstream culture has us fear as \u201cthe end of the world.\u201d But Alarc\u00f3n reassures us that like the celebrated theory of thermo-dynamics \u201ceverything \/ that has been \/ and will be \/ is here and now.\u201d No need to fear the date \u2013 or each other; \u201cno separation \/ between \/ spirit and body \/ you and me\u201d the poet says.<\/p>\n

Poem after poem speaks of oneness in distinct ways and as I read the poems I looked at my fellow passengers. If we are all part of one soul then we are all accepted and no one is left out. It was a beautiful moment. Anxiety and stress dissolved faster than a magic pill.<\/p>\n

But while we are all one we are also individuals like the Aztec Lord Xochipilli in the poem of the same name, who flirts and dances \u201c\u2026leaving behind \/ his dark \/ sunglasses \/ and flowers \/ blooming \/ in every\/ heart!\u201d<\/p>\n

This lovely volume is designed with some poems in only in two languages, usually Spanish\/English. Others stand in varied combination of three and some full out in all glorious five.<\/p>\n

Ce\u2022Uno\u2022One: Poemas para el Nuevo Sol \/Poems for the New Sun is part of a new poetry series called Poetas\u2022Puentes, whose mission is to help emerging poets (of any age) by publishing work that will help them begin or expand their careers \u2014as poets, writers, teachers. Poetas\u2022Puentes sees poets and poems as bridges across the divides of culture and language, or any of the other canyons that separate us.<\/p>\n

About languages, Alarc\u00f3n states in this excerpt from the poem \u201cWords\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u2026the words<\/p>\n

from all<\/p>\n

corners<\/p>\n

and from<\/p>\n

all eras<\/p>\n

of the world<\/p>\n

speak<\/p>\n

the same<\/p>\n

tongue<\/p>\n

of rancor<\/p>\n

of love<\/p>\n

of dreams<\/p>\n

But the worldview of Ce\u2022Uno\u2022One is not all bliss. We feel the shadow of this renewed wave of xenophobia and fear of immigrants in his poem of tribute \u201cto all the poets and activists \u2013 defenders of life\u201d. This is an excerpt:<\/p>\n

\u2026this poem<\/p>\n

is everything<\/p>\n

but faceless<\/p>\n

it is a bright teenager<\/p>\n

trapped in the dark<\/p>\n

soulless, dreamless<\/p>\n

no man\u2019s land<\/p>\n

that a Dream Act<\/p>\n

could just vanish<\/p>\n

this poem<\/p>\n

cries from the back<\/p>\n

of the bus<\/p>\n

\u2026 \u201cwe have a heart<\/p>\n

a soul, a familia<\/p>\n

just like you\u201d<\/p>\n

this poem<\/p>\n

is the unwritten<\/p>\n

poem of this Land<\/p>\n

Alarc\u00f3n himself is a joyously activist poet who has established a virtual public space through the Internet on Facebook as \u201cPoets Responding to SB 1070.\u201d What Alarc\u00f3n says of his teacher\/mentor Don Luis Leal who lived to be 103-years-wise, we can say of Alarc\u00f3n\u2019s own work. Ce\u2022Uno\u2022One is:<\/p>\n
